Jesus, the Christ: Priesthood of: Aaron and his Sons

The priesthood of Aaron and his sons, as established in the Old Testament, serves as a significant typological precursor to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. The Aaronic priesthood was instituted by God as part of the Mosaic Law, with Aaron, the brother of Moses, appointed as the first high priest. This priesthood was characterized by specific duties, rituals, and a hereditary succession, all of which pointed forward to the ultimate fulfillment in Christ.

Institution of the Aaronic Priesthood

The establishment of the Aaronic priesthood is detailed in the Book of Exodus. God commanded Moses to consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve as priests: "Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the Israelites, to serve Me as priests—Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons" (Exodus 28:1). This priesthood was marked by a series of ordination rituals, including washing, anointing, and the donning of sacred garments (Exodus 29:4-9).

Functions and Duties

The primary role of the Aaronic priests was to mediate between God and the people of Israel. They were responsible for offering sacrifices, maintaining the Tabernacle (and later the Temple), and teaching the Law. Leviticus 9:7 highlights their sacrificial duties: "Then Moses said to Aaron, 'Approach the altar and present your sin offering and your burnt offering to make atonement for yourself and the people; and present the offering of the people to make atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded'" .

Limitations of the Aaronic Priesthood

Despite its divine institution, the Aaronic priesthood was inherently limited. The priests themselves were sinners, requiring atonement for their own sins before they could intercede for the people. Hebrews 7:27 underscores this limitation: "Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself" .

Fulfillment in Christ

The priesthood of Jesus Christ is presented in the New Testament as the fulfillment and perfection of the Aaronic priesthood. Jesus, as the sinless Son of God, serves as the ultimate High Priest. Hebrews 4:14-15 declares, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin" .

Unlike the Aaronic priests, Jesus' priesthood is eternal and unchangeable. Hebrews 7:24-25 states, "But because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them" . This eternal priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek, a priesthood that predates and supersedes the Aaronic order (Hebrews 7:11-17).

Typology and Significance

The Aaronic priesthood serves as a shadow of the greater reality found in Christ. The sacrifices, rituals, and mediatory role of Aaron and his sons foreshadowed the perfect and final sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. As the true High Priest, Jesus not only offers the sacrifice but is Himself the sacrifice, providing a once-for-all atonement for sin. This fulfillment underscores the continuity and progression of God's redemptive plan from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, with Jesus as the central figure in God's salvific history.
