Topical Encyclopedia
The title "Son of Man" is one of the most profound and frequently used designations for Jesus Christ in the New Testament. It appears over 80 times in the Gospels, predominantly in the self-referential statements of Jesus. This title is rich in theological significance and is deeply rooted in the Old Testament, particularly in the prophetic literature.

Old Testament Background

The term "Son of Man" finds its origins in the Hebrew Scriptures, most notably in the book of Daniel. In Daniel 7:13-14 , the prophet describes a vision: "In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like a Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed." This passage presents the "Son of Man" as a heavenly figure endowed with authority, glory, and sovereign power, a figure who is both distinct from and yet closely associated with God.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, Jesus frequently uses the title "Son of Man" to refer to Himself, emphasizing both His humanity and His divine mission. This self-designation highlights His role as the representative human, the one who fully identifies with humanity while also fulfilling divine purposes.

1. Humanity and Identification: The title underscores Jesus' genuine humanity. In Matthew 8:20 , Jesus says, "Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." Here, Jesus identifies with the human condition, experiencing the hardships and limitations of earthly life.

2. Suffering and Sacrifice: The "Son of Man" is also associated with suffering and sacrifice. In Mark 10:45 , Jesus declares, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." This statement encapsulates His mission to offer Himself as a sacrificial atonement for sin, fulfilling the role of the Suffering Servant prophesied in Isaiah 53.

3. Authority and Judgment: The title conveys Jesus' authority and role as judge. In John 5:27 , Jesus states, "And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man." This reflects the eschatological role of the Son of Man as the one who will execute divine judgment at the end of the age.

4. Glory and Exaltation: The "Son of Man" is also a title of exaltation and future glory. In Matthew 24:30 , Jesus speaks of His return: "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory." This echoes the vision in Daniel, affirming Jesus' ultimate victory and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.

Theological Significance

The title "Son of Man" encapsulates the mystery of the Incarnation, where Jesus is both fully God and fully man. It affirms His solidarity with humanity, His role as the suffering servant, His authority as the divine judge, and His future exaltation as the glorious King. Through this title, Jesus reveals the fullness of His identity and mission, inviting believers to recognize Him as the promised Messiah who fulfills the hopes and prophecies of the Old Testament.
