Integrity

Integrity, in the biblical context, refers to the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that align with God's standards. It is a steadfast adherence to ethical and moral codes, often highlighted in Scripture as a virtue that is pleasing to God and beneficial to human relationships.

The Bible frequently underscores the importance of integrity. In Proverbs 11:3 , it is written, "The integrity of the upright guides them, but the perversity of the faithless destroys them." This verse illustrates how integrity serves as a guiding principle for the righteous, leading them in paths of righteousness and away from the pitfalls of deceit and immorality.

Job is often cited as a paragon of integrity. Despite severe trials and suffering, Job maintained his integrity, refusing to curse God or abandon his faith. In Job 2:3 , the Lord says to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. And he still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause."

The New Testament also emphasizes integrity, particularly in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 5:37 , Jesus instructs, "But let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.' For anything more comes from the evil one." This teaching highlights the importance of honesty and straightforwardness, key components of integrity.

Consequences

The Bible presents both positive and negative consequences associated with integrity. Those who live with integrity are often promised blessings and favor from God, while those who lack integrity face adverse outcomes.

Positive consequences of integrity are evident in passages like Psalm 25:21 , which states, "May integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for You." Here, integrity is linked with divine protection and preservation. Similarly, Proverbs 20:7 declares, "The righteous man walks in integrity; blessed are his children after him." This suggests that integrity not only benefits the individual but also extends blessings to future generations.

Conversely, the absence of integrity leads to negative consequences. Proverbs 28:18 warns, "He who walks with integrity will be kept safe, but whoever is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall." This verse highlights the peril that awaits those who choose deceit and moral compromise.

The account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11 serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of lacking integrity. Their deceit regarding the sale of their property and the subsequent lie to the Holy Spirit resulted in their immediate deaths, demonstrating the seriousness with which God views integrity.
