Influence and Stewardship

In the Bible, the concept of influence is intricately woven into the narrative of human relationships and divine interaction. Influence, in a biblical sense, refers to the capacity to affect the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, often in a subtle or indirect manner. The Scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings on the power and responsibility of influence.

One of the most profound illustrations of influence is found in the life of Jesus Christ. His teachings, actions, and sacrifice have had an unparalleled impact on humanity. In Matthew 5:14-16 , Jesus tells His followers, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Here, believers are called to be a positive influence, illuminating the world with their faith and actions.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the power of influence in 1 Corinthians 15:33 , warning, "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" This highlights the reciprocal nature of influence, where both positive and negative associations can shape one's character and actions.

The Old Testament provides examples of influence through figures like Joseph, whose integrity and wisdom influenced the course of Egyptian history (Genesis 41). Similarly, Esther's courage and strategic influence saved her people from destruction (Esther 4-7).

Stewardship

Stewardship in the Bible refers to the responsible management and care of resources, talents, and responsibilities entrusted to individuals by God. It is a recurring theme that underscores the belief that everything belongs to God, and humans are merely caretakers of His creation.

The concept of stewardship is first introduced in Genesis 1:28 , where God commands Adam and Eve, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth." This mandate establishes humanity's role as stewards of the earth, responsible for its care and management.

In the New Testament, Jesus expands on the idea of stewardship through parables. The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) illustrates the expectation that individuals use their God-given resources wisely and productively. The master in the parable commends the faithful servants, saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master."

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes stewardship in 1 Corinthians 4:2 , stating, "Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful." This underscores the importance of faithfulness and accountability in managing what God has entrusted to each person.

Stewardship extends beyond material possessions to include time, talents, and spiritual gifts. Believers are encouraged to use their abilities for the edification of the church and the advancement of God's kingdom, as seen in 1 Peter 4:10 : "As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another."

In summary, both influence and stewardship are vital biblical principles that call believers to live responsibly and purposefully, impacting the world for God's glory and managing His gifts with diligence and faithfulness.
