Hope as a Confident Expectation
Jump to: SubtopicsTerms
Topical Encyclopedia
Hope, within the biblical context, is more than mere wishful thinking or a vague aspiration. It is a confident expectation rooted in the promises and character of God. This hope is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, providing believers with assurance and strength in the face of life's uncertainties and trials.

Old Testament Foundations

The concept of hope is woven throughout the Old Testament, often linked with trust in God and His covenantal promises. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word often translated as "hope" is "tikvah," which conveys a sense of expectation and waiting. For instance, in Jeremiah 29:11, God declares, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" . Here, hope is tied to God's sovereign plans and His faithfulness to fulfill them.

The Psalms frequently express hope in God as a refuge and deliverer. Psalm 42:11 states, "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God" . This verse illustrates the psalmist's confident expectation in God's salvation and presence, even amidst personal turmoil.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, hope takes on a more defined shape through the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Greek word "elpis" is used to describe this confident expectation, which is now centered on the redemptive work of Christ and the promise of eternal life. Romans 5:5 affirms, "And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us" . This hope is assured by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, a guarantee of the believer's future inheritance.

The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christian hope. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:19-20, "If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" . The resurrection assures believers of their own future resurrection and eternal life, making hope a living and active force in their lives.

Hope in the Life of the Believer

Hope is not only a future expectation but also a present reality that influences the believer's daily life. It is a source of joy and perseverance, as seen in Romans 12:12: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer" . This verse highlights how hope empowers believers to endure hardships with a joyful and prayerful spirit.

Moreover, hope is a purifying force, motivating believers to live holy lives in anticipation of Christ's return. 1 John 3:3 states, "And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure" . The expectation of seeing Christ face to face inspires a commitment to personal holiness and spiritual growth.

Hope and the Community of Faith

Hope is also a communal experience, shared and nurtured within the body of Christ. The church is called to be a beacon of hope in the world, as described in 1 Peter 3:15: "But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you" . Believers are encouraged to articulate and demonstrate their hope, providing a testimony to the transformative power of the gospel.

In summary, biblical hope is a confident expectation based on the unchanging nature of God and His promises. It is a dynamic and sustaining force in the life of the believer, offering assurance of salvation, strength in trials, and motivation for holy living. Through hope, Christians are empowered to face the future with confidence, knowing that their ultimate destiny is secure in Christ.
