Contempt, a feeling of disdain or scorn towards others, is a condition of the heart that the Bible warns against. It is an attitude that can lead to division, pride, and a lack of love, which are contrary to the teachings of Christ. The Scriptures provide guidance on recognizing and guarding against contempt in our lives.

Biblical Warnings Against Contempt

The Bible frequently addresses the dangers of contempt and the importance of humility and love. In Proverbs 18:3 , it is written, "With a wicked man comes contempt as well, and shame is accompanied by disgrace." This verse highlights the association between wickedness and contempt, suggesting that a heart filled with scorn is far from righteousness.

Jesus Himself warned against contempt in His teachings. In the Sermon on the Mount, He equates contempt with serious moral failure. Matthew 5:22 states, "But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to the fire of hell." Here, Jesus emphasizes the gravity of harboring contemptuous thoughts or words towards others.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Christ serves as the ultimate example of humility and love, devoid of contempt. Philippians 2:3-5 instructs believers, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." Christ's life and ministry were marked by compassion and a servant's heart, even towards those who opposed Him.

Practical Steps to Guard Against Contempt

1. Cultivate Humility: Recognizing our own need for grace helps us to view others with compassion rather than contempt. James 4:6 reminds us, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'"

2. Practice Love and Forgiveness: Love is the antidote to contempt. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love as patient, kind, and not easily angered. Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of love, as seen in Ephesians 4:32 : "Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you."

3. Seek Reconciliation: When contempt arises, seek to reconcile and restore relationships. Matthew 18:15 advises, "If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over."

4. Guard Your Heart and Mind: Proverbs 4:23 instructs, "Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life." Regular prayer, meditation on Scripture, and self-examination can help keep our hearts aligned with God's will.

5. Embrace the Community of Believers: Fellowship with other believers provides accountability and encouragement. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

By adhering to these biblical principles, believers can guard against the sin of contempt, fostering a community marked by love, humility, and unity.
