Sovereignty of God

The sovereignty of God is a fundamental doctrine in Christian theology, affirming that God is the supreme authority and all things are under His control. This concept is rooted in the understanding that God, as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, exercises His will over all creation. The Bible presents numerous passages that highlight God's sovereign rule.

In the book of Isaiah, God declares His unmatched power and authority: "I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will accomplish'" (Isaiah 46:9-10). This passage underscores God's ability to fulfill His purposes, demonstrating His control over history and future events.

The Psalms frequently celebrate God's sovereignty, as seen in Psalm 103:19: "The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all" . This verse affirms that God's reign is universal, extending over all creation, both in heaven and on earth.

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul emphasizes God's sovereign choice and purpose in salvation. In Romans 9:15-16, Paul writes, "For He says to Moses: 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' So then, it does not depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy" . This passage highlights God's sovereign prerogative in dispensing grace and mercy according to His will.

Compassion of God

While God's sovereignty establishes His ultimate authority, His compassion reveals His tender and loving nature. The Bible consistently portrays God as compassionate, merciful, and abounding in steadfast love.

In the Old Testament, God's compassion is evident in His dealings with Israel. Despite their repeated disobedience, God remains patient and merciful. In Exodus 34:6, God proclaims His character to Moses: "The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth" . This self-revelation highlights God's willingness to forgive and His enduring love for His people.

The Psalms also reflect God's compassionate nature. Psalm 145:8-9 states, "The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion. The LORD is good to all; His compassion rests on all He has made" . These verses emphasize that God's compassion extends to all creation, demonstrating His kindness and care for every living being.

In the New Testament, the life and ministry of Jesus Christ provide the ultimate expression of God's compassion. Jesus, moved by compassion, heals the sick, feeds the hungry, and comforts the sorrowful. In Matthew 9:36, it is written, "When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd" . Jesus' actions reveal the heart of God, who is deeply concerned for the well-being of humanity.

The apostle Paul also speaks of God's compassion in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God" . This passage highlights the reciprocal nature of God's compassion, as believers are called to extend the same comfort they receive from God to others.
