Compassion of God

The compassion of God is a central theme throughout the Bible, reflecting His deep love and mercy towards humanity. The Hebrew word often translated as "compassion" is "racham," which conveys a sense of deep mercy and tender affection. In the New Testament, the Greek word "splagchnizomai" is used, indicating a visceral, heartfelt compassion.

In the Old Testament, God's compassion is frequently highlighted in His dealings with the Israelites. Despite their repeated disobedience, God continually shows mercy. In Exodus 34:6, God proclaims His nature to Moses: "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth." This declaration underscores God's enduring patience and willingness to forgive.

The Psalms often celebrate God's compassion. Psalm 103:13-14 states, "As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust." This imagery of a father's love illustrates the depth of God's care and understanding of human frailty.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ embodies God's compassion. The Gospels frequently describe Jesus as being moved with compassion for the suffering and lost. In Matthew 9:36 , "When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Jesus' healing of the sick, feeding of the hungry, and teaching of the multitudes all reflect the compassionate heart of God.

Faithfulness of God

God's faithfulness is another foundational attribute, emphasizing His reliability and steadfastness. The Hebrew word "emunah" and the Greek word "pistis" both convey the idea of firmness, stability, and trustworthiness.

Throughout Scripture, God's faithfulness is demonstrated in His unwavering commitment to His promises and covenants. In Deuteronomy 7:9 , Moses reminds the Israelites, "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments." This assurance of God's faithfulness provides a foundation for trust and obedience.

The Psalms frequently extol God's faithfulness. Psalm 36:5 declares, "Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds." This poetic language emphasizes the vastness and reliability of God's faithfulness, extending beyond human comprehension.

In the New Testament, God's faithfulness is affirmed in the life and work of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 1:9 , assures believers, "God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful." This faithfulness is further demonstrated in the promise of salvation and eternal life through Christ.

The faithfulness of God is also a source of comfort and hope in times of trial. Lamentations 3:22-23 beautifully captures this sentiment: "Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!" This passage reassures believers of God's constant presence and renewal of mercy.
