Topical Encyclopedia Elisha, the successor of the prophet Elijah, is a prominent figure in the Old Testament, known for his powerful miracles and prophecies. One of the most significant instances of Elisha's prophetic ministry is the fulfillment of his prophecy concerning the siege of Samaria, as recorded in 2 Kings 6:24–7:20.Context of the Prophecy The narrative begins with the Aramean king Ben-Hadad besieging Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. The siege resulted in a severe famine, causing desperate conditions within the city. The situation was so dire that the people resorted to extreme measures for survival, as described in 2 Kings 6:25: "So there was a great famine in Samaria, and they besieged it until a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter cab of dove’s dung for five shekels of silver." In this context of despair, the king of Israel, Joram (also known as Jehoram), sought Elisha's counsel. The king blamed the LORD for the calamity and intended to execute Elisha, whom he held responsible for the divine judgment. Elisha's Prophecy In response to the king's messenger, Elisha delivered a bold prophecy, declaring that the LORD would bring about a miraculous reversal of the dire circumstances. In 2 Kings 7:1, Elisha proclaimed: "Hear the word of the LORD. This is what the LORD says: 'About this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria, six quarts of fine flour will sell for a shekel, and twelve quarts of barley will sell for a shekel.'" This prophecy seemed impossible given the current conditions, leading to skepticism from the king's officer, who doubted the possibility of such a rapid change. Elisha responded to the officer's disbelief with a further prophecy: "You will see it with your own eyes," Elisha answered, "but you will not eat any of it" (2 Kings 7:2). Fulfillment of the Prophecy The fulfillment of Elisha's prophecy unfolded in a remarkable manner. The LORD caused the Aramean army to hear the sound of chariots, horses, and a great army, leading them to flee in panic, abandoning their camp and leaving behind provisions. This divine intervention is recorded in 2 Kings 7:6-7: "For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, 'Look, the king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and Egyptians to attack us!' So they got up and fled at dusk, abandoning their tents and horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives." Four lepers, who were outside the city gate, discovered the deserted camp and reported it to the city. The people of Samaria then plundered the Aramean camp, resulting in an abundance of food and supplies. As Elisha had prophesied, the prices of flour and barley dropped dramatically, fulfilling the word of the LORD. The skeptical officer, who had doubted Elisha's prophecy, was trampled at the gate by the rushing crowd and died, thus fulfilling Elisha's word that he would see the abundance but not partake in it (2 Kings 7:17-20). Significance The fulfillment of Elisha's prophecy serves as a testament to the power and faithfulness of God, demonstrating His ability to deliver His people in seemingly impossible situations. It also underscores the authority of Elisha as a prophet of the LORD, whose words, inspired by God, came to pass precisely as spoken. This event highlights the themes of divine intervention, judgment, and the importance of faith in God's promises.
