Division

In the biblical context, division often refers to the separation or discord among individuals or groups, particularly within the community of believers. The Bible addresses division in both the Old and New Testaments, highlighting its causes, consequences, and the call for unity among God's people.

In the Old Testament, division is frequently seen in the context of the nation of Israel. The kingdom itself was divided after the reign of Solomon into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah (1 Kings 12). This division was a result of disobedience and idolatry, leading to weakened national strength and eventual exile.

The New Testament addresses division within the early church. The Apostle Paul, in his letters, often admonishes believers to avoid divisions. In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul writes, "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction." Here, Paul emphasizes the importance of unity in the body of Christ, urging believers to be of one mind and purpose.

Jesus Himself spoke about division, acknowledging that His message would cause division even among close family members. In Luke 12:51-53, He states, "Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three." This division is not the result of Christ's desire for discord but rather the inevitable consequence of differing responses to His message.

Belief

Belief, or faith, is a central theme in the Bible, representing trust and confidence in God and His promises. It is through belief that individuals enter into a relationship with God and receive His grace and salvation.

In the Old Testament, belief is exemplified by figures such as Abraham, whose faith was credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). Abraham's belief in God's promises, despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, serves as a model of faith for all believers.

The New Testament further develops the concept of belief, particularly in the teachings of Jesus and the writings of the apostles. In John 3:16, one of the most well-known verses, Jesus declares, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." Here, belief in Jesus as the Son of God and Savior is presented as the pathway to eternal life.

The Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of belief in his epistles, particularly in the context of justification by faith. In Romans 10:9-10, Paul writes, "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved." This passage underscores the necessity of both inward belief and outward confession in the process of salvation.

Belief is also portrayed as a gift from God, enabled by the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul states, "For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast." This highlights the divine origin of belief and the inability of human effort to achieve salvation apart from God's grace.

Throughout Scripture, belief is both a personal and communal experience, calling individuals to trust in God and His Word while fostering unity and love within the body of Christ.
