Creation of the Coverings and Frames

The creation of the coverings and frames is a significant aspect of the construction of the Tabernacle, as detailed in the Book of Exodus. These elements were integral to the structure and function of the Tabernacle, which served as the dwelling place of God among the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness.

Biblical Description

The instructions for the creation of the coverings and frames are found primarily in Exodus 26. The Tabernacle was to be a portable sanctuary, and its design was given directly by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. The coverings and frames were essential for the Tabernacle's construction, providing both protection and a sacred space for worship.

Coverings

The Tabernacle had multiple layers of coverings, each with specific materials and purposes:

1. Linen Curtains: The innermost covering was made of fine twisted linen, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and was embroidered with cherubim. Exodus 26:1 states, "You are to make the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely spun linen, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, with cherubim skillfully worked into them."

2. Goat Hair Curtains: Over the linen curtains, a covering of goat hair was placed. This was a more durable material, providing additional protection. Exodus 26:7 describes, "You are to make curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle—eleven curtains in all."

3. Ram Skins Dyed Red: Above the goat hair curtains was a covering of ram skins dyed red, adding another layer of protection and symbolism.

4. Sea Cow (or Dugong) Skins: The outermost covering was made of sea cow skins, providing waterproofing and durability against the elements.

Frames

The frames of the Tabernacle were constructed from acacia wood, a durable and resilient material. These frames formed the structural backbone of the Tabernacle:

· Dimensions and Construction: Each frame was ten cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. They were overlaid with gold and set in silver bases, as described in Exodus 26:15-30. The frames were connected by crossbars, also overlaid with gold, ensuring stability and strength.

· Symbolism: The use of acacia wood overlaid with gold symbolizes the incorruptible nature of Christ's humanity (acacia wood) and His divine glory (gold). The silver bases represent redemption, as silver is often associated with atonement in Scripture.

Spiritual Significance

The coverings and frames of the Tabernacle hold deep spiritual significance. The layers of coverings symbolize the protection and holiness of God's presence, while the frames represent the strength and stability of His covenant with Israel. The intricate design and materials reflect the beauty and majesty of God's dwelling place, emphasizing the reverence and awe due to Him.

The Tabernacle, with its coverings and frames, served as a foreshadowing of the coming of Christ, who would dwell among His people as the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise to be with His people. As John 1:14 states, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
