Topical Encyclopedia
The creation of man is a foundational event described in the Bible, primarily in the book of Genesis. According to the biblical narrative, man is the pinnacle of God's creative work, uniquely made in the image of God and given dominion over the earth.

Biblical Account

The account of man's creation is found in Genesis 1:26-27 and Genesis 2:7. In Genesis 1:26-27 , it is written: "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.' So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."

Genesis 2:7 provides further detail: "Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being."

Theological Significance

The creation of man in the image of God (imago Dei) is a central theological concept. This denotes that humans possess certain attributes that reflect God's character, such as rationality, morality, creativity, and the capacity for relationships. This divine image sets humanity apart from the rest of creation and establishes the inherent dignity and worth of every individual.

Dominion and Stewardship

Man's creation is accompanied by a mandate to exercise dominion over the earth. Genesis 1:28 states: "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.'" This command implies a responsibility to steward the earth's resources wisely and to care for creation as God's representatives.

The Creation of Woman

The creation of woman is described in Genesis 2:18-22. God declares that it is not good for man to be alone and decides to make a suitable helper for him. The LORD God causes Adam to fall into a deep sleep, takes one of his ribs, and forms a woman. This act signifies the complementary nature of man and woman, designed to live in partnership and mutual support.

The Fall and Its Consequences

The initial state of man was one of innocence and communion with God. However, the narrative of the Fall in Genesis 3 describes how sin entered the world through Adam and Eve's disobedience. This event brought about spiritual death and separation from God, affecting all of creation and introducing the need for redemption.

New Testament References

The New Testament reaffirms the creation of man and the significance of being made in God's image. In Matthew 19:4-6, Jesus refers to the creation account to emphasize the sanctity of marriage. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15:45-49, contrasts the first man, Adam, with Christ, the "last Adam," highlighting the restoration and eternal life brought through Jesus.

Conclusion

The creation of man is a profound testament to God's intentional design and purpose for humanity. It underscores the unique role of humans in creation and the divine calling to reflect God's image in the world.
