Chorashan is a location mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically within the context of the narratives surrounding King David. The name "Chorashan" is believed to mean "smoking furnace" or "smoking pit," which may indicate a geographical feature or characteristic of the area.

Biblical Reference:

Chorashan is referenced in 1 Samuel 30:30, where it is listed among the places to which David sent some of the spoils of his victory over the Amalekites. The passage reads: "to those in Hormah, Bor-ashan, Athach," . In this context, Chorashan is referred to as "Bor-ashan," which is considered by many scholars to be the same location. This distribution of spoils was part of David's effort to maintain alliances and support among the various towns and leaders in the region of Judah.

Historical and Geographical Context:

The exact location of Chorashan is not definitively known, and it is not mentioned frequently in biblical texts. However, it is generally thought to be situated in the southern part of ancient Judah, possibly in the Negev region. This area was characterized by its arid climate and rugged terrain, which would have been suitable for the kind of guerilla warfare tactics employed by David and his men during their time in the wilderness.

Theological Significance:

From a theological perspective, the mention of Chorashan in the narrative of David's life highlights the importance of community and mutual support among the people of Israel. David's decision to share the spoils of war with the towns of Judah, including Chorashan, reflects his strategic acumen and his commitment to fostering unity and loyalty among his followers. This act of generosity also underscores the biblical principle of sharing blessings and resources with others, particularly those who are part of one's community or faith family.

Cultural and Archaeological Insights:

While there is limited archaeological evidence directly associated with Chorashan, the broader region of southern Judah has yielded numerous findings that provide insight into the life and times of David. These include fortified cities, agricultural installations, and artifacts that reflect the material culture of the period. Such discoveries help to paint a picture of the socio-political landscape in which David operated and the challenges he faced in consolidating his rule over Israel.

In summary, Chorashan, though briefly mentioned, plays a role in the larger narrative of David's rise to power and his efforts to establish a united kingdom under his leadership. Its inclusion in the biblical text serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of the various communities within Israel and the importance of strategic alliances in the ancient Near Eastern context.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Smoking furnace, one of the places where "David himself and his men were wont to haunt" (1 Samuel 30:30, 31). It is probably identical with Ashan (Joshua 15:42; 19:7), a Simeonite city in the Negeb, i.e., the south, belonging to Judah. The word ought, according to another reading, to be "Bor-ashan."
