Brothers' Jealousy and Plot

The theme of brothers' jealousy and plot is a recurring motif in the Bible, illustrating the destructive power of envy and the sovereignty of God in turning evil intentions into His divine purposes. This theme is most prominently displayed in the narratives of Cain and Abel, and Joseph and his brothers.

Cain and Abel

The first instance of brotherly jealousy is found in the account of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. In Genesis 4, both brothers bring offerings to the Lord, but God favors Abel's offering over Cain's. This divine preference incites Cain's jealousy and anger. Genesis 4:6-7 records God's warning to Cain: "Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.'" Despite this warning, Cain succumbs to his jealousy and murders Abel, leading to his own curse and exile.

Joseph and His Brothers

Another significant account of brothers' jealousy is found in the account of Joseph, the favored son of Jacob. Joseph's brothers are envious of the special treatment he receives from their father, symbolized by the "robe of many colors" (Genesis 37:3). Their jealousy is further fueled by Joseph's dreams, which suggest that he will one day rule over them. Genesis 37:11 states, "And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind."

The brothers' jealousy culminates in a plot to kill Joseph, but they ultimately decide to sell him into slavery. Genesis 37:28 recounts, "So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt." Despite their malicious intentions, God uses their actions to position Joseph in Egypt, where he eventually rises to power and saves his family during a famine. Joseph later reassures his brothers in Genesis 50:20 , saying, "As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

Theological Implications

The accounts of Cain and Abel, and Joseph and his brothers, highlight the destructive nature of jealousy and the moral responsibility individuals have to master sinful desires. They also demonstrate God's providence in using human actions, even those born out of sin, to fulfill His greater purposes. These narratives serve as cautionary tales about the consequences of envy and the importance of trusting in God's plan, even when faced with adversity and betrayal.
