Barsabbas is a name mentioned in the New Testament, associated with two distinct individuals who played roles in the early Christian community. The name Barsabbas is Aramaic in origin, meaning "son of Sabbas" or "son of the Sabbath."

1. Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus): Joseph Barsabbas is mentioned in the Book of Acts as one of the candidates considered to replace Judas Iscariot as an apostle. After Judas' betrayal and subsequent death, the early church sought to fill the vacancy among the Twelve Apostles. In Acts 1:23-26 , it is recorded: "So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. And they prayed, 'Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.' Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles." Although Joseph Barsabbas was not chosen, his inclusion as a candidate indicates his standing and reputation within the early Christian community.

2. Judas called Barsabbas: Another individual named Barsabbas is mentioned in Acts 15:22 during the account of the Jerusalem Council. This Judas Barsabbas, along with Silas, was chosen to accompany Paul and Barnabas to Antioch with a letter from the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. The letter addressed the concerns of Gentile converts and clarified the requirements for their inclusion in the Christian community. Acts 15:22 states: "Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to select men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, two leaders among the brothers." Judas Barsabbas is described as a leader among the brethren, indicating his significant role and influence in the early church.

The accounts of these two men named Barsabbas highlight the diversity and dedication of the early Christian leaders. Both Joseph and Judas Barsabbas were recognized for their faithfulness and leadership, contributing to the foundational period of the Christian church. Their accounts, though brief in the biblical narrative, reflect the broader efforts of the early believers to establish and maintain the teachings of Jesus Christ amidst growing communities of faith.
