So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord,

Timothy served in a setting where false teaching and social pressure threatened bold confession of Christ. The testimony of the Lord is the gospel concerning Jesus’ incarnation, atoning death, bodily resurrection, and promised return. Jesus warned that those ashamed of Him and His words would face His judgment (Mark 8:38). The gospel may bring reproach in a hostile world, yet it reveals the saving power and wisdom of God.

Paul was imprisoned under Roman authority, likely during his final imprisonment in Rome, but he understood his chains as belonging to Christ’s sovereign purpose. His suffering did not discredit his message; it demonstrated his faithfulness to the Lord who had called him. Timothy was not to withdraw from Paul because association with an imprisoned apostle could bring danger and disgrace. Paul’s endurance joined the witness of believers who had counted Christ worthy of every earthly loss.

Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel

Faithful proclamation of the gospel inevitably meets resistance from a world opposed to Christ (the Anointed One). Paul (small) did not call Timothy (honoring God) to pursue suffering, but to refuse compromise when obedience brought hardship. Sharing in gospel suffering unites believers with Christ, who suffered for sinners, and with His servants throughout the church’s history. Timothy’s ministry required courage to guard the truth, confront error, and continue preaching despite opposition.

by the power of God.

God supplies the strength required for faithful endurance. The same divine power displayed in Christ’s resurrection sustains His people through fear, weakness, persecution, and loss.
