God’s concern reaches beyond outward adornment to the hidden life from which conduct, speech, desires, and loyalties arise. Peter addresses Christian wives in a setting where outward beauty and social standing carried great weight, yet he directs attention to the character formed by faith and obedience to Christ. Proverbs 4:23 likewise teaches that the heart must be guarded because life flows from it. A life submitted to the Lord produces conduct that can bear witness even within a difficult household.

Physical attractiveness, clothing, and jewelry are temporary, but godly character endures before God and into eternity. It does not require a woman to be silent, fearful, or unable to speak truth; it commends the inward peace that trusts the Lord. The beauty Peter commends is not dependent on youth, wealth, approval, or circumstance, but belongs to those whose hearts are being renewed by the grace of Christ.
