How can we ensure our faith remains strong when Christ returns, as in Luke 18:8? The pointed question in Luke 18:8 “I tell you, He will promptly carry out justice for them. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” Why enduring faith matters • Christ’s return is certain and imminent (Acts 1:11; Revelation 22:20). • Only persevering faith receives the promised reward (Hebrews 10:35-37). • Genuine believers are “shielded by God’s power through faith” until the last day (1 Peter 1:5). Know the obstacles to steadfast faith • Delay―the apparent slowness of His coming tempts us to doubt (2 Peter 3:3-4). • Discouragement―injustice and suffering can erode confidence (Psalm 73:2-3). • Deception―false teaching and worldly philosophies compete for our allegiance (1 Timothy 4:1). • Distraction―everyday busyness and pleasure dull spiritual alertness (Luke 21:34-36). Five biblical anchors for unshakeable faith 1. Persist in prayer – Luke 18:1 “their need to pray at all times and not lose heart.” – Jude 20-21 “build yourselves up…pray in the Holy Spirit…as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2. Feed daily on God’s Word – Romans 10:17 “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” – Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” 3. Walk in Spirit-led obedience – James 1:22 “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” – Ephesians 6:16 “take up the shield of faith…extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” 4. Maintain fellowship and accountability – Hebrews 10:24-25 “spur one another on…encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 two are better than one; they lift each other up. 5. Focus on future glory – Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight…kept the faith…there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.” Putting it into practice today • Schedule a specific daily prayer time; guard it like any vital appointment. • Read or listen to Scripture before other media each morning. • Quickly obey every prompting of the Spirit revealed in the Word. • Commit to regular, in-person worship and small-group community. • Keep a gratitude list of answered prayers and promised future rewards; review it when discouragement strikes. Stay anchored to the promise of His return “Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13) Holding to these practices, we will be found trusting, persevering, and ready when the Son of Man appears. |
