25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned? 26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen. 27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes. 28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it. 29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him. 30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.
