1 For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a prayer of David. Do you rulers really pronounce just decisions? Do you judge people fairly? Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly? For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam. Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity?
2 No! You plan how to do what is unjust; you deal out violence in the earth. No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth. No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.
3 The wicked turn aside from birth; liars go astray as soon as they are born. The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies. Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
4 Their venom is like that of a snake, like a deaf serpent that does not hear, They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear, Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
5 that does not respond to the magicians, or to a skilled snake-charmer. so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter. that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.
6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths! Smash the jawbones of the lions, O LORD! O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD! Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; LORD, tear out the fangs of those lions!
7 Let them disappear like water that flows away! Let them wither like grass! Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted. Let them vanish like water that flows away; when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.
8 Let them be like a snail that melts away as it moves along! Let them be like stillborn babies that never see the sun! 11 Then observers will say, |Yes indeed, the godly are rewarded! Yes indeed, there is a God who judges in the earth!| Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.” Then people will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”
