1 For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack.
2 Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly. My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.
3 When I am afraid, I trust in you. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
4 In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
5 All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil. All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.
6 They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life. They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life. They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.
7 Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God! For their crime will they escape? In wrath cast down the peoples, O God! Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.
8 You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll? You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll — are they not in your record?
9 My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side. Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me. Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me.
10 In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise-- In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?
12 I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, I must perform my vows to you, O God; I will render thank offerings to you. I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
