<V 48:1>Unto the end. A Psalm to the sons of Korah. <V 48:2>Hear these things, all nations. Pay attention, all inhabitants of the world: | Hear this, all peoples! Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, | For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world, |
<V 48:3>whoever is earth-born, you sons of men, together as one, the rich and the poor. | both low and high, rich and poor together! | both low and high, rich and poor alike: |
<V 48:4>My mouth will speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart will speak prudence. | My mouth shall speak wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding. | My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding. |
<V 48:5>I will incline my ear to a parable. I will open my case with the psaltery. | I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre. | I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle: |
<V 48:6>Why should I fear in the evil day? The iniquity at my heel will surround me. | Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, | Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me— |
<V 48:7>Those who trust in their own strength and who glory in the multitude of their riches, | those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches? | those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? |
<V 48:8>no brother redeems, nor will man buy back. He will not give to God his appeasement, | Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, | No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— |
<V 48:9>nor the price for the redemption of his soul. And he will labor continuously, | for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, | the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough— |
<V 48:10>and he will still live, until the end. | that he should live on forever and never see the pit. | so that they should live on forever and not see decay. |
<V 48:11>He will not see death, when he sees the wise dying: the foolish and the senseless will perish together. And they will leave their riches to strangers. | For he sees that even the wise die; the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others. | For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others. |
<V 48:12>And their sepulchers will be their houses forever, their tabernacles from generation to generation. They have called their names in their own lands. | Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they called lands by their own names. | Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. |
<V 48:13>And man, when he was held in honor, did not understand. He has been compared to the senseless beasts, and he has become like them. | Man in his pomp will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish. | People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. |
<V 48:14>This way of theirs is a scandal to them. And afterwards, they will delight in their mouth. | This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah | This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. |
<V 48:15>They have been placed in Hell like sheep. Death will feed on them. And the just will have dominion over them in the morning. And their help will grow old in Hell for their glory. | Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; death shall be their shepherd, and the upright shall rule over them in the morning. Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell. | They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. |
<V 48:16>Even so, truly God will redeem my soul from the hand of Hell, when he will receive me. | But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah | But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself. |
<V 48:17>Do not be afraid, when a man will have been made rich, and when the glory of his house will have been multiplied. | Be not afraid when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases. | Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; |
<V 48:18>For when he dies, he will take nothing away, and his glory will not descend with him. | For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him. | for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. |
<V 48:19>For his soul will be blessed in his lifetime, and he will admit to you when you do good to him. | For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed—and though you get praise when you do well for yourself— | Though while they live they count themselves blessed— and people praise you when you prosper— |
<V 48:20>He will even enter with the progeny of his fathers, but, even in eternity, he will not see the light. | his soul will go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again see light. | they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. |
<V 48:21>Man, when he was in honor, did not understand. He has been compared to the senseless beasts, and he has become like them. | Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish. | People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish. |
