A song of ascents. “They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,” let Israel say; | A song of ascents. Many a time they have persecuted me from my youth—let Israel now declare— | “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth”— let Israel now say— |
“they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. | many a time they have persecuted me from my youth, but they have not prevailed against me. | “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me. |
Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long. | The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows long. | The plowers plowed upon my back; they made long their furrows.” |
But the LORD is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.” | The LORD is righteous; He has cut me from the cords of the wicked. | The LORD is righteous; he has cut the cords of the wicked. |
May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. | May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. | May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward! |
May they be like grass on the roof, which withers before it can grow; | May they be like grass on the rooftops, which withers before it can grow, | Let them be like the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up, |
a reaper cannot fill his hands with it, nor one who gathers fill his arms. | unable to fill the hands of the reaper, or the arms of the binder of sheaves. | with which the reaper does not fill his hand nor the binder of sheaves his arms, |
May those who pass by not say to them, “The blessing of the LORD be on you; we bless you in the name of the LORD.” | May none who pass by say to them, “The blessing of the LORD be on you; we bless you in the name of the LORD.” | nor do those who pass by say, “The blessing of the LORD be upon you! We bless you in the name of the LORD!” |
