1 My son! Keep my sayings, || And lay up my commands with you. My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands, and live, || And my law as the pupil of your eye. keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers, || Write them on the tablet of your heart. bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You [are] my sister.” And cry to understanding, “Relative!” Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend, Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and to insight, “You are my relative.”
5 To preserve you from a strange woman, || From a stranger who has made her sayings smooth. to keep you from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words. They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words.
6 For at a window of my house, || I have looked out through my casement, For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice, At the window of my house I looked down through the lattice.
7 And I see among the simple ones, || I discern among the sons, || A young man lacking understanding, and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense, I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense.
8 Passing on in the street, near her corner, || And the way [to] her house he steps, passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house
9 In the twilight—in the evening of day, || In the darkness of night and blackness. in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness. at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in.
10 And behold, a woman to meet him—(A harlot’s dress, and watchful of heart, And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart. Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 She [is] noisy, and stubborn, her feet do not rest in her house. She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home; (She is unruly and defiant, her feet never stay at home;
12 Now in an out-place, now in broad places, || And she lies in wait near every corner)— now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait. now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.)
13 And she laid hold on him and kissed him, || She has hardened her face and says to him, She seizes him and kisses him, and with bold face she says to him, She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said:
14 “Sacrifices of peace-offerings [are] by me, || Today I have completed my vows. “I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my vows; “Today I fulfilled my vows, and I have food from my fellowship offering at home.
15 Therefore I have come forth to meet you, || To earnestly seek your face, and I find you. so now I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found you. So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you!
16 I decked my bed [with] ornamental coverings, || Carved works—cotton of Egypt. I have spread my couch with coverings, colored linens from Egyptian linen; I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I sprinkled my bed [with] myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, we are filled [with] love until the morning, || We delight ourselves in loves. Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love. Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning; let’s enjoy ourselves with love!
