1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof will suddenly be shattered beyond recovery. He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken beyond healing. He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.
2 When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan. When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.
3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth. He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth. Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth. 4 By justice a king brings stability to the land, but a man who exacts tribute demolishes it. By justice a king builds up the land, but he who exacts gifts tears it down. The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. By justice a king gives a country stability, but those who are greedy for bribes tear it down. A just king gives stability to his nation, but one who demands bribes destroys it.
5 A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet. To flatter friends is to lay a trap for their feet.
6 An evil man is caught by his own sin, but a righteous one sings and rejoices. An evil man is ensnared in his transgression, but a righteous man sings and rejoices. In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. Evildoers are snared by their own sin, but the righteous shout for joy and are glad. Evil people are trapped by sin, but the righteous escape, shouting for joy.
7 The righteous consider the cause of the poor, but the wicked have no regard for such concerns. A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man does not understand such knowledge. The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern. The godly care about the rights of the poor; the wicked don’t care at all.
8 Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger. Scoffers set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath. Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger. Mockers can get a whole town agitated, but the wise will calm anger.
9 If a wise man goes to court with a fool, there will be raving and laughing with no resolution. If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet. If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. If a wise person goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace. If a wise person takes a fool to court, there will be ranting and ridicule but no satisfaction.
10 Men of bloodshed hate a blameless man, but the upright care for his life. Bloodthirsty men hate one who is blameless and seek the life of the upright. The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. The bloodthirsty hate a person of integrity and seek to kill the upright. The bloodthirsty hate blameless people, but the upright seek to help them.
11 A fool vents all his anger, but a wise man holds it back. A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back. A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.
12 If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials will be wicked. If a ruler listens to falsehood, all his officials will be wicked. If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked. If a ruler pays attention to liars, all his advisers will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives light to the eyes of both. The poor man and the oppressor meet together; the LORD gives light to the eyes of both. 14 A king who judges the poor with fairness—his throne will be established forever. If a king faithfully judges the poor, his throne will be established forever. 15 A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.
16 When the wicked thrive, rebellion increases; but the righteous will see their downfall. When the wicked increase, transgression increases, but the righteous will look upon their downfall. When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall. When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall. When the wicked are in authority, sin flourishes, but the godly will live to see their downfall.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will bring delight to your soul. Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart. Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad.
18 Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the Law. Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction. When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.
19 A servant cannot be corrected by words alone; though he understands, he will not respond. By mere words a servant is not disciplined, for though he understands, he will not respond. A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer. Servants cannot be corrected by mere words; though they understand, they will not respond. Words alone will not discipline a servant; the words may be understood, but they are not heeded.
20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them. There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking.
21 A servant pampered from his youth will bring grief in the end. Whoever pampers his servant from childhood will in the end find him his heir. He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length. A servant pampered from youth will turn out to be insolent. A servant pampered from childhood will become a rebel.
22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression. A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression. An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins. An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.
23 A man’s pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor. One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.
24 A partner to a thief hates his own soul; he receives the oath but does not testify. The partner of a thief hates his own life; he hears the curse, but discloses nothing. Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not. The accomplices of thieves are their own enemies; they are put under oath and dare not testify. If you assist a thief, you only hurt yourself. You are sworn to tell the truth, but you dare not testify.
25 The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is set securely on high. The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe. The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety.
26 Many seek the ruler’s favor, but a man receives justice from the LORD. Many seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the LORD that a man gets justice. Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD. Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that one gets justice. Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice comes from the LORD.
27 An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is upright is detestable to the wicked. An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked. An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright. The righteous despise the unjust; the wicked despise the godly.
