|---|---|---|---|---|
Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; | Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, | But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, |
And you neglected all my counsel And were not willing to accept my reproof; | because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, | since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, |
I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes, | I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, | I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— |
When your dread comes like a storm And your disaster comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. | when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. | when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. |
Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me earnestly but they will not find me, | Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. | “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, |
Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of Yahweh. | Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, | since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. |
They were not willing to accept my counsel, They spurned all my reproof. | would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, | Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, |
So they shall eat of the fruit of their way And be satisfied with their own devices. | therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. | they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. |
For the turning away of the simple will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them. | For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; | For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; |
But he who listens to me shall dwell securely And will be at ease from the dread of evil.” | but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.” | but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” |
