1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;
3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness and judgment and equity; to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion: to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; and that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels: Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—
6 To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
