Parallel Chapters Cleansing the Camps
(Leviticus 13:1-46) 1The LORD said to Moses, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, | 1The LORD instructed Moses: " |
"Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. | 2“Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp everyone who is leprous or has a discharge and everyone who is unclean through contact with the dead. | 2"Command the sons of Israel that they send away from the camp every leper and everyone having a discharge and everyone who is unclean because of a dead person. | 2Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead: | 2Command the Israelites to send away anyone from the camp who is afflicted with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, or anyone who is defiled because of a corpse. |
Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them." | 3You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell.” | 3"You shall send away both male and female; you shall send them outside the camp so that they will not defile their camp where I dwell in their midst." | 3Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell. | 3You must send away both male or female; send them outside the camp, so that they will not defile their camps where I dwell among them." |
The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses. | 4And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so the people of Israel did. | 4The sons of Israel did so and sent them outside the camp; just as the LORD had spoken to Moses, thus the sons of Israel did. | 4And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp: as the LORD spake unto Moses, so did the children of Israel. | 4The Israelites did this, sending them outside the camp. The Israelites did as the LORD instructed Moses. |
Restitution for Trespasses
(Luke 19:1-10) 5The LORD said to Moses, | 5And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 5Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 5And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, | 5The LORD spoke to Moses: " |
"Say to the Israelites: 'Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD is guilty | 6“Speak to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person realizes his guilt, | 6"Speak to the sons of Israel, 'When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against the LORD, and that person is guilty, | 6Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty; | 6Tell the Israelites: When a man or woman commits any sin against another, that person acts unfaithfully toward the LORD and is guilty. |
and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. | 7he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. | 7then he shall confess his sins which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it one-fifth of it, and give it to him whom he has wronged. | 7Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed. | 7The person is to confess the sin he has committed. He is to pay full compensation, add a fifth of its value to it, and give it to the individual he has wronged. |
But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. | 8But if the man has no next of kin to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him. | 8But if the man has no relative to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution which is made for the wrong must go to the LORD for the priest, besides the ram of atonement, by which atonement is made for him. | 8But if the man have no kinsman to recompense the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed unto the LORD, even to the priest; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement shall be made for him. | 8But if that individual has no relative to receive compensation, the compensation goes to the LORD for the priest, along with the atonement ram by which the priest will make atonement for the guilty person. |
All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. | 9And every contribution, all the holy donations of the people of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his. | 9Also every contribution pertaining to all the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they offer to the priest, shall be his. | 9And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring unto the priest, shall be his. | 9Every holy contribution the Israelites present to the priest will be his. |
Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.'" | 10Each one shall keep his holy donations: whatever anyone gives to the priest shall be his.” | 10So every man's holy gifts shall be his; whatever any man gives to the priest, it becomes his.'" | 10And every man's hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth the priest, it shall be his. | 10Each one's holy contribution is his to give; what each one gives to the priest will be his." |
The Adultery Test 11Then the LORD said to Moses, | 11And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 11Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 11And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, | 11The LORD spoke to Moses: " |
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him | 12“Speak to the people of Israel, If any man’s wife goes astray and breaks faith with him, | 12"Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'If any man's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him, | 12Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, | 12Speak to the Israelites and tell them: If any man's wife goes astray, is unfaithful to him, |
so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), | 13if a man lies with her sexually, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, since she was not taken in the act, | 13and a man has intercourse with her and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband and she is undetected, although she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act, | 13And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner; | 13and sleeps with another, but it is concealed from her husband, and she is undetected, even though she has defiled herself, since there is no witness against her, and she wasn't caught in the act; |
and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure--or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure-- | 14and if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself, | 14if a spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife when she has defiled herself, or if a spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife when she has not defiled herself, | 14And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: | 14and if a feeling of jealousy comes over the husband and he becomes jealous because of his wife who has defiled herself--or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he becomes jealous of her though she has not defiled herself-- |
then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing. | 15then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance. | 15the man shall then bring his wife to the priest, and shall bring as an offering for her one-tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall not pour oil on it nor put frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of memorial, a reminder of iniquity. | 15Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. | 15then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering for her of two quarts of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance that brings sin to mind." |
"'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the LORD. | 16“And the priest shall bring her near and set her before the LORD. | 16'Then the priest shall bring her near and have her stand before the LORD, | 16And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD: | 16The priest is to bring her forward and have her stand before the LORD. |
Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. | 17And the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. | 17and the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel; and he shall take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. | 17And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water: | 17Then the priest is to take holy water in a clay bowl, and take some of the dust from the tabernacle floor and put it in the water. |
After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. | 18And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD and unbind the hair of the woman’s head and place in her hands the grain offering of remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse. | 18The priest shall then have the woman stand before the LORD and let the hair of the woman's head go loose, and place the grain offering of memorial in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy, and in the hand of the priest is to be the water of bitterness that brings a curse. | 18And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse: | 18After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering for remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse. |
Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. | 19Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness while you were under your husband’s authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. | 19The priest shall have her take an oath and shall say to the woman, "If no man has lain with you and if you have not gone astray into uncleanness, being under the authority of your husband, be immune to this water of bitterness that brings a curse; | 19And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causeth the curse: | 19The priest will require the woman to take an oath and will say to her, 'If no man has slept with you, if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, be unaffected by this bitter water that brings a curse. |
But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband"-- | 20But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband’s authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, | 20if you, however, have gone astray, being under the authority of your husband, and if you have defiled yourself and a man other than your husband has had intercourse with you" | 20But if thou hast gone aside to another instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee beside thine husband: | 20But if you have gone astray while under your husband's authority, if you have defiled yourself and a man other than your husband has slept with you-- |
here the priest is to put the woman under this curse--"may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. | 21then’ (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) ‘the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your body swell. | 21(then the priest shall have the woman swear with the oath of the curse, and the priest shall say to the woman), "the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people by the LORD'S making your thigh waste away and your abdomen swell; | 21Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell; | 21at this point the priest must make the woman take the oath with the sworn curse, and he is to say to her--'May the LORD make you into an object of your people's cursing and swearing when He makes your thigh shrivel and your belly swell. |
May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries." "'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it." | 22May this water that brings the curse pass into your bowels and make your womb swell and your thigh fall away.’ And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, Amen.’ | 22and this water that brings a curse shall go into your stomach, and make your abdomen swell and your thigh waste away." And the woman shall say, "Amen. Amen." | 22And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. | 22May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach, causing your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.'" And the woman must reply, 'Amen, Amen.'" |
"'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. | 23“Then the priest shall write these curses in a book and wash them off into the water of bitterness. | 23'The priest shall then write these curses on a scroll, and he shall wash them off into the water of bitterness. | 23And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water: | 23Then the priest is to write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water. |
He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. | 24And he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. | 24Then he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings a curse, so that the water which brings a curse will go into her and cause bitterness. | 24And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter. | 24He will require the woman to drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and cause bitter suffering. |
The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD and bring it to the altar. | 25And the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy out of the woman’s hand and shall wave the grain offering before the LORD and bring it to the altar. | 25'The priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman's hand, and he shall wave the grain offering before the LORD and bring it to the altar; | 25Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the offering before the LORD, and offer it upon the altar: | 25The priest is to take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman's hand, wave the offering before the LORD, and bring it to the altar. |
The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. | 26And the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. | 26and the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial offering and offer it up in smoke on the altar, and afterward he shall make the woman drink the water. | 26And the priest shall take an handful of the offering, even the memorial thereof, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water. | 26The priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar. Then he will require the woman to drink the water." |
If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. | 27And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people. | 27When he has made her drink the water, then it shall come about, if she has defiled herself and has been unfaithful to her husband, that the water which brings a curse will go into her and cause bitterness, and her abdomen will swell and her thigh will waste away, and the woman will become a curse among her people. | 27And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. | 27When he makes her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, and her thigh will shrivel. She will become a curse among her people. |
If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children. | 28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children. | 28'But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will then be free and conceive children. | 28And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. | 28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is pure, she will be unaffected and will be able to conceive children." |
"'This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, | 29“This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, though under her husband’s authority, goes astray and defiles herself, | 29This is the law of jealousy: when a wife, being under the authority of her husband, goes astray and defiles herself, | 29This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled; | 29This is the law regarding jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband's authority, |
or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the LORD and is to apply this entire law to her. | 30or when the spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife. Then he shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall carry out for her all this law. | 30or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife, he shall then make the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest shall apply all this law to her. | 30Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. | 30or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he becomes jealous of his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest will apply this entire ritual to her. |
The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.'" | 31The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.” | 31'Moreover, the man will be free from guilt, but that woman shall bear her guilt.'" | 31Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity, and this woman shall bear her iniquity. | 31The husband will be free of guilt, but that woman will bear the consequences of her guilt." |
