2	“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, from a son of twenty years and upward, by the house of their fathers, everyone going out to the host in Israel.”	“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.”	“Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel.”
3	And Moses speaks—Eleazar the priest also—with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, [near] Jericho, saying,	And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,	So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said,
4	“From a son of twenty years and upward,” as YHWH has commanded Moses and the sons of Israel who are coming out from the land of Egypt.	“Take a census of the people, from twenty years old and upward,” as the LORD commanded Moses. The people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were:	“Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the LORD commanded Moses.” These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:
5	Reuben, firstborn of Israel—sons of Reuben: of Enoch [is] the family of the Enochite; of Pallu the family of the Palluite;	Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;	The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were: through Hanok, the Hanokite clan; through Pallu, the Palluite clan;
6	of Hezron the family of the Hezronite; of Carmi the family of the Carmite.	of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.	through Hezron, the Hezronite clan; through Karmi, the Karmite clan.
7	These [are] families of the Reubenite, and their numbered ones are forty-three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.	These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were 43,730.	These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
8	And the son of Pallu [is] Eliab;	And the sons of Pallu: Eliab.	The son of Pallu was Eliab,
9	and the sons of Eliab [are] Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram; this [is that] Dathan and Abiram, called ones of the congregation, who have striven against Moses and against Aaron in the congregation of Korah, in their striving against YHWH,	The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the LORD	and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the LORD.
10	and the earth opens her mouth, and swallows them and Korah, in the death of the congregation, in the fire consuming the two hundred and fifty men, and they become a sign;	and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and they became a warning.	The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign.
11	but the sons of Korah did not die.	But the sons of Korah did not die.	The line of Korah, however, did not die out.
12	Sons of Simeon by their families: of Nemuel [is] the family of the Nemuelite; of Jamin the family of the Jaminite; of Jachin the family of the Jachinite;	The sons of Simeon according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites;	The descendants of Simeon by their clans were: through Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; through Jamin, the Jaminite clan; through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;
13	of Zerah the family of the Zerahite; of Shaul the family of the Shaulite.	of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites.	through Zerah, the Zerahite clan; through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
14	These [are] families of the Simeonite—twenty-two thousand and two hundred.	These are the clans of the Simeonites, 22,200.	These were the clans of Simeon; those numbered were 22,200.
15	Sons of Gad by their families: of Zephon [is] the family of the Zephonite; of Haggi the family of the Haggite; of Shuni the family of the Shunite;	The sons of Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;	The descendants of Gad by their clans were: through Zephon, the Zephonite clan; through Haggi, the Haggite clan; through Shuni, the Shunite clan;

18	These [are] families of the sons of Gad by their numbered ones—forty thousand and five hundred.	These are the clans of the sons of Gad as they were listed, 40,500.	These were the clans of Gad; those numbered were 40,500.
19	Sons of Judah [are] Er and Onan; and Er dies—Onan also—in the land of Canaan.	The sons of Judah were Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.	Er and Onan were sons of Judah, but they died in Canaan.
20	And sons of Judah by their families are: of Shelah the family of the Shelanite; of Perez the family of the Perezite; of Zerah the family of the Zerahite;	And the sons of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.	The descendants of Judah by their clans were: through Shelah, the Shelanite clan; through Perez, the Perezite clan; through Zerah, the Zerahite clan.
21	and sons of Perez are: of Hezron the family of the Hezronite; of Hamul the family of the Hamulite.	And the sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.	The descendants of Perez were: through Hezron, the Hezronite clan; through Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
22	These [are] families of Judah by their numbered ones—seventy-six thousand and five hundred.	These are the clans of Judah as they were listed, 76,500.	These were the clans of Judah; those numbered were 76,500.
23	Sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola [is] the family of the Tolaite; of Pua the family of the Punite;	The sons of Issachar according to their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Punites;	The descendants of Issachar by their clans were: through Tola, the Tolaite clan; through Puah, the Puite clan;
24	of Jashub the family of the Jashubite; of Shimron the family of the Shimronite.	of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites.	through Jashub, the Jashubite clan; through Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
25	These [are] families of Issachar by their numbered ones—sixty-four thousand and three hundred.	These are the clans of Issachar as they were listed, 64,300.	These were the clans of Issachar; those numbered were 64,300.
26	Sons of Zebulun by their families: of Sered [is] the family of the Sardite; of Elon the family of the Elonite; of Jahleel the family of the Jahleelite.	The sons of Zebulun, according to their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.	The descendants of Zebulun by their clans were: through Sered, the Seredite clan; through Elon, the Elonite clan; through Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.
27	These [are] families of the Zebulunite by their numbered ones—sixty thousand and five hundred.	These are the clans of the Zebulunites as they were listed, 60,500.	These were the clans of Zebulun; those numbered were 60,500.
28	Sons of Joseph by their families [are] Manasseh and Ephraim.	The sons of Joseph according to their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.	The descendants of Joseph by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim were:
29	Sons of Manasseh: of Machir [is] the family of the Machirite; and Machir has begotten Gilead; of Gilead [is] the family of the Gileadite.	The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir was the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.	The descendants of Manasseh: through Makir, the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead); through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.
30	These [are] sons of Gilead: of Jeezer [is] the family of the Jeezerite; of Helek the family of the Helekite;	These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Helek, the clan of the Helekites;	These were the descendants of Gilead: through Iezer, the Iezerite clan; through Helek, the Helekite clan;
31	and of Asriel the family of the Asrielite; and of Shechem the family of the Shechemite;	and of Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites;	through Asriel, the Asrielite clan; through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
32	and of Shemida the family of the Shemidaite; and of Hepher the family of the Hepherite.	and of Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.	through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
33	And Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but [only] daughters, and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad [are] Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.	Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.	(Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.)
34	These [are] families of Manasseh, and their numbered ones [are] fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.	These are the clans of Manasseh, and those listed were 52,700.	These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.
35	These [are] sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah [is] the family of the Shuthelhite; of Becher the family of the Bachrite; of Tahan the family of the Tahanite.	These are the sons of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the clan of the Becherites; of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.	These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: through Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan; through Beker, the Bekerite clan; through Tahan, the Tahanite clan.
36	And these [are] sons of Shuthelah: of Eran the family of the Eranite.	And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the clan of the Eranites.	These were the descendants of Shuthelah: through Eran, the Eranite clan.
37	These [are] families of the sons of Ephraim by their numbered ones—thirty-two thousand and five hundred. These [are] sons of Joseph by their families.	These are the clans of the sons of Ephraim as they were listed, 32,500. These are the sons of Joseph according to their clans.	These were the clans of Ephraim; those numbered were 32,500. These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.
38	Sons of Benjamin by their families: of Bela [is] the family of the Belaite; of Ashbel the family of the Ashbelite; of Ahiram the family of the Ahiramite;	The sons of Benjamin according to their clans: of Bela, the clan of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites;	The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were: through Bela, the Belaite clan; through Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan; through Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;
39	of Shupham the family of the Shuphamite; of Hupham the family of the Huphamite.	of Shephupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites.	through Shupham, the Shuphamite clan; through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.
40	And sons of Bela are Ard and Naaman: [of Ard is] the family of the Ardite; of Naaman the family of the Naamite.	And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the clan of the Ardites; of Naaman, the clan of the Naamites.	The descendants of Bela through Ard and Naaman were: through Ard, the Ardite clan; through Naaman, the Naamite clan.
41	These [are] sons of Benjamin by their families, and their numbered ones [are] forty-five thousand and six hundred.	These are the sons of Benjamin according to their clans, and those listed were 45,600.	These were the clans of Benjamin; those numbered were 45,600.
42	These [are] sons of Dan by their families: of Shuham [is] the family of the Shuhamite; these [are] families of Dan by their families;	These are the sons of Dan according to their clans: of Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These are the clans of Dan according to their clans.	These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: through Shuham, the Shuhamite clan. These were the clans of Dan:
43	all the families of the Shuhamite by their numbered ones—sixty-four thousand and four hundred.	All the clans of the Shuhamites, as they were listed, were 64,400.	All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.
44	Sons of Asher by their families: of Jimna [is] the family of the Jimnite; of Jesui the family of the Jesuite; of Beriah the family of the Beriite.	The sons of Asher according to their clans: of Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the clan of the Beriites.	The descendants of Asher by their clans were: through Imnah, the Imnite clan; through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan; through Beriah, the Beriite clan;
45	Of sons of Beriah: of Heber [is] the family of the Heberite; of Malchiel the family of the Malchielite.	Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the clan of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites.	and through the descendants of Beriah: through Heber, the Heberite clan; through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.
46	And the name of the daughter of Asher [is] Sarah.	And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.	(Asher had a daughter named Serah.)
47	These [are] families of the sons of Asher by their numbered ones—fifty-three thousand and four hundred.	These are the clans of the sons of Asher as they were listed, 53,400.	These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.
48	Sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel [is] the family of the Jahzeelite; of Guni the family of the Gunite;	The sons of Naphtali according to their clans: of Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the clan of the Gunites;	The descendants of Naphtali by their clans were: through Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan; through Guni, the Gunite clan;
49	of Jezer the family of the Jezerite; of Shillem the family of the Shillemite.	of Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites.	through Jezer, the Jezerite clan; through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.

51	These [are] numbered ones of the sons of Israel—six hundred thousand and one thousand seven hundred and thirty.	This was the list of the people of Israel, 601,730.	The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.
52	And YHWH speaks to Moses, saying,	The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,	The LORD said to Moses,
53	“The land is apportioned to these by inheritance, by the number of names;	“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names.	“The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.
54	to the many you increase their inheritance, and to the few you diminish their inheritance; each is given his inheritance according to his numbered ones.	To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list.	To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.
55	Surely the land is apportioned by lot; they inherit by the names of the tribes of their fathers;	But the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.	Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe.
56	their inheritance is apportioned according to the lot between many and few.”	Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”	Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”
57	And these [are] numbered ones of the Levite by their families: of Gershon [is] the family of the Gershonite; of Kohath the family of the Kohathite; of Merari the family of the Merarite.	This was the list of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites.	These were the Levites who were counted by their clans: through Gershon, the Gershonite clan; through Kohath, the Kohathite clan; through Merari, the Merarite clan.
58	These [are] families of the Levite: the family of the Libnite, the family of the Hebronite, the family of the Mahlite, the family of the Mushite, the family of the Korathite. And Kohath has begotten Amram,	These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath was the father of Amram.	These also were Levite clans: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, the Korahite clan. (Kohath was the forefather of Amram;
59	and the name of Amram’s wife is Jochebed, daughter of Levi, whom has been born to Levi in Egypt; and she bears to Amram Aaron, and Moses, and their sister Miriam.	The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister.	the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.
60	And born to Aaron [are] Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar;	And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.	Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61	and Nadab dies—Abihu also—in their bringing strange fire near before YHWH.	But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.	But Nadab and Abihu died when they made an offering before the LORD with unauthorized fire.)
62	And their numbered ones are twenty-three thousand, every male from a son of a month and upwards, for they have not numbered themselves in the midst of the sons of Israel, because an inheritance has not been given to them in the midst of the sons of Israel.	And those listed were 23,000, every male from a month old and upward. For they were not listed among the people of Israel, because there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.	All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.
63	These [are] those numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who have numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, [near] Jericho;	These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.	These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
64	and among these there has not been a man of those numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai,	But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.	Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai.
65	for YHWH said of them, “They certainly die in the wilderness”; and there has not been left a man of them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.	For the LORD had said of them, “They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.	For the LORD had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
