THEN the LORD said, Hear these things, O you chiefs of the house of Jacob and you princes of the house of Israel: Is it not meet for you to know justice? | And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?— | Then I said, “Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel. Should you not embrace justice, |
O you haters of the good and lovers of evil, who strip the skin from off the people and the flesh from off their bones; | you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones, | you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones; |
Who oppress my people and flay their skin from off them and break their bones and chop them in pieces, as if they were to be put in the pot, like meat in a caldron. | who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron. | who eat my people’s flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?” |
Then shall they cry to the LORD, but he will not hear them; he will even turn away his face from them at that time, for they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. | Then they will cry to the LORD, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have made their deeds evil. | Then they will cry out to the LORD, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done. |
Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who bite with their teeth and preach peace; and when one puts not bread into their mouths, they preach war against him. | Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths. | This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead my people astray, they proclaim ‘peace’ if they have something to eat, but prepare to wage war against anyone who refuses to feed them. |
Therefore it shall be night to you, that you shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark to you, that you shall not divine; and the sun shall go down upon the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them. | Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them; | Therefore night will come over you, without visions, and darkness, without divination. The sun will set for the prophets, and the day will go dark for them. |
Then the seers shall be ashamed, and the diviners confounded; yea, they shall all cover their lips because God will not answer them. | the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. | The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced. They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God.” |
But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of justice and of might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. | But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. | But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin. |
Now hear this, O you chiefs of the house of Jacob and princes of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity; | Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight, | Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right; |
Who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity; | who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity. | who build Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with wickedness. |
The chiefs thereof judge for a bribe, and its priests teach for hire, and its prophets divine for money; yet they rely upon the LORD, saying, The LORD is among us, no evil can come upon us; | Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the LORD and say, “Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us.” | Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the LORD’s support and say, “Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us.” |
Therefore, because of you, Zion shall be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become desolate, and the mountain of the house like a forest. | Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. | Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets. |
