1 And I said: “Hear now, O heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Is it not for you⁺ to know justice— And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?— Then I said, “Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel. Should you not embrace justice,
2 those hating good and loving evil, those tearing away their skin from upon them, and their flesh from their bones, you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones, you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones;
3 and who eat the flesh of My people, and strip off their skin from them and break their bones and spread them as in the pot, and like flesh in the midst of a cauldron?” who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron. who eat my people’s flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?”
4 Then they will cry to YHWH, and He will not answer them; and He will hide His face from them at that time, because their deeds have been evil. Then they will cry to the LORD, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have made their deeds evil. Then they will cry out to the LORD, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done.
5 Thus says YHWH concerning the prophets leading astray my people, those biting with their teeth while they call out, Peace, and who do not give to their mouth, and they have sanctified against him war: Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths. This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead my people astray, they proclaim ‘peace’ if they have something to eat, but prepare to wage war against anyone who refuses to feed them.
6 “Therefore a night is unto you⁺ without a vision, and it will grow dark for you⁺ without divination, and the sun will go down on the prophets, and the daylight will turn black over them. Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them; Therefore night will come over you, without visions, and darkness, without divination. The sun will set for the prophets, and the day will go dark for them.
7 And the seers will be ashamed, and the diviners will be disgraced, and they will cover over their mustache—all of them—for there is no answer from God!” the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced. They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God.”
8 However I am filled with power by the Spirit of YHWH, and justice and strength to declare to Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.
9 Hear this now, O heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, those abhorring justice, and all that is upright, they pervert, Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight, Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right;
10 those building up Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with injustice. who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity. who build Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with wickedness.
11 Her heads give judgment for a bribe, and her priests give instruction for a price, and her prophets practice divination for silver. And on YHWH they lean, and say, “Is not YHWH among us? No harm can come upon us.” Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the LORD and say, “Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us.” Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the LORD’s support and say, “Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us.”
12 Therefore, because of you⁺, Zion will be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house, like the heights of the forest. Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.
