For provocation slayeth the perverse, And envy putteth to death the simple, Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple. Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.
I -- I have seen the perverse taking root, And I mark his habitation straightway, I have seen the fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.

Whose harvest the hungry doth eat, And even from the thorns taketh it, And the designing swallowed their wealth. The hungry eat his harvest, and he takes it even out of thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth. The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
For sorrow cometh not forth from the dust, Nor from the ground springeth up misery. For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground, For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.
For man to misery is born, And the sparks go high to fly. but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
Yet I -- I inquire for God, And for God I give my word, “As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause, “But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.

To set the low on a high place, And the mourners have been high in safety. he sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
Making void thoughts of the subtile, And their hands do not execute wisdom. He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.
Capturing the wise in their subtilty, And the counsel of wrestling ones was hastened, He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end. He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.
By day they meet darkness, And as night -- they grope at noon. They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope at noonday as in the night. Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night.
And He saveth the wasted from their mouth, And from a strong hand the needy, But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouth and from the hand of the mighty. He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.
And there is hope to the poor, And perverseness hath shut her mouth. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts her mouth. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
Lo, the happiness of mortal man, God doth reprove him: And the chastisement of the Mighty despise not, “Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty. “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
For He doth pain, and He bindeth up, He smiteth, and His hands heal. For he wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal. For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal.
In six distresses He delivereth thee, And in seven evil striketh not on thee. He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven no evil shall touch you. From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you.
In famine He hath redeemed thee from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword. In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. In famine he will deliver you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
When the tongue scourgeth thou art hid, And thou art not afraid of destruction, When it cometh. You shall be hidden from the lash of the tongue, and shall not fear destruction when it comes. You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes.
At destruction and at hunger thou mockest, And of the beast of the earth, Thou art not afraid. At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the beasts of the earth. You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals.
(For with sons of the field is thy covenant, And the beast of the field Hath been at peace with thee.) For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
And thou hast known that thy tent is peace, And inspected thy habitation, and errest not, You shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing. You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.

Thou comest in full age unto the grave, As the going up of a stalk in its season. You shall come to your grave in ripe old age, like a sheaf gathered up in its season. You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season.
Lo, this -- we searched it out -- it is right, hearken; And thou, know for thyself! Behold, this we have searched out; it is true. Hear, and know it for your good.” “We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”
