And Elius further continued, and said, | And Elihu continued, and said: | Elihu continued: |
Wait form me yet a little while, that I may teach thee: for there is yet speech in me. | “Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. | “Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God’s behalf. |
Having fetched my knowledge from afar, and according to my works, | I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. | I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker. |
I will speak just things truly, and thou shalt not unjustly receive unjust words. | For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you. | Be assured that my words are not false; one who has perfect knowledge is with you. |
But know that the Lord will not cast off an innocent man: being mighty in strength of wisdom, | “Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. | “God is mighty, but despises no one; he is mighty, and firm in his purpose. |
he will not by any means save alive the ungodly: and he will grant the judgment of the poor. | He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. | He does not keep the wicked alive but gives the afflicted their rights. |
He will not turn away his eyes from the righteous, but they shall be with kings on the throne: and he will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted. | He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne he sets them forever, and they are exalted. | He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever. |
But they that are bound in fetters shall be holden in cords of poverty. | And if they are bound in chains and caught in the cords of affliction, | But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction, |
And he shall recount to them their works, and their transgressions, for such will act with violence. | then he declares to them their work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly. | he tells them what they have done— that they have sinned arrogantly. |
But he will hearken to the righteous: and he has said that they shall turn from unrighteousness. | He opens their ears to instruction and commands that they return from iniquity. | He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil. |
If they should hear and serve him , they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in honour. | If they listen and serve him, they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasantness. | If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment. |
But he preserves not the ungodly; because they are not willing to know the Lord, and because when reproved they were disobedient. | But if they do not listen, they perish by the sword and die without knowledge. | But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge. |
And the hypocrites in heart will array wrath against themselves ; they will not cry, because he has bound them. | “The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. | “The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help. |
Therefore let their soul die in youth, and their life be wounded by messengers of death . | They die in youth, and their life ends among the cult prostitutes. | They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines. |
Because they afflicted the weak and helpless: and he will vindicate the judgment of the meek. | He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity. | But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction. |
And he has also enticed thee out of the mouth of the enemy: | He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness. | “He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food. |
there is a deep gulf and a rushing stream beneath it, and thy table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous; | “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked; judgment and justice seize you. | But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you. |
but there shall be wrath upon the ungodly, by reason of the ungodliness of the bribes which they received for iniquities. | Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing, and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. | Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside. |
Let not thy mind willingly turn thee aside from the petition of the feeble that are in distress. | Will your cry for help avail to keep you from distress, or all the force of your strength? | Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress? |
And draw not forth all the mighty men by night, so that the people should go up instead of them. | Do not long for the night, when peoples vanish in their place. | Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes. |
But take heed lest thou do that which is wrong: for of this thou has made choice because of poverty. | Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. | Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction. |
Behold, the Mighty One shall prevail by his strength: for who is powerful as he is? | Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? | “God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? |
And who is he that examines his works? or who can say, he has wrought injustice? | Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, ‘You have done wrong’? | Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, ‘You have done wrong’? |
Remember that his works are great beyond those which men have attempted. | “Remember to extol his work, of which men have sung. | Remember to extol his work, which people have praised in song. |
Every man has seen in himself, how many mortals are wounded. | All mankind has looked on it; man beholds it from afar. | All humanity has seen it; mortals gaze on it from afar. |
Behold, the Mighty One is great, and we shall not know him : the number of his years is even infinite. | Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. | How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out. |
And the drops of rain are numbered by him, and shall be poured out in rain to form a cloud. | For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, | “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams; |
The ancient heavens shall flow, and the clouds overshadow innumerable mortals: he has fixed a time to cattle, and they know the order of rest. Yet by all these things thy understanding is not astonished, neither is thy mind disturbed in thy body. | which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly. | the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind. |
And though one should understand the outspreadings of the clouds, or the measure of his tabernacle; | Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion? | Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion? |
behold he will stretch his bow against him, and he covers the bottom of the sea. | Behold, he scatters his lightning about him and covers the roots of the sea. | See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea. |
For by them he will judge the nations: he will give food to him that has strength. | For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. | This is the way he governs the nations and provides food in abundance. |
He has hidden the light in his hands, and given charge concerning it to the interposing cloud . | He covers his hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark. | He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark. |
The Lord will declare concerning this to his friend: but there is a portion also for unrighteousness. | Its crashing declares his presence; the cattle also declare that he rises. | His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach. |
