1 THEN Elihu added, and said, And Elihu continued, and said: Elihu continued:
2 Bear with me a little, and I will show you; for there are yet words to speak on God's behalf. “Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. “Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God’s behalf.
3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are not deceitful, and my knowledge is blameless with you. For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you. Be assured that my words are not false; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.
5 Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise him who is pure as milk. “Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. “God is mighty, but despises no one; he is mighty, and firm in his purpose.
6 He does not preserve the life of the wicked; but gives justice to the poor. He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. He does not keep the wicked alive but gives the afflicted their rights.
7 He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous; he sets kings on the throne; yea, they are exalted for ever. He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne he sets them forever, and they are exalted. He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.
8 And if they be bound in chains, then they go down through destruction to poverty. And if they are bound in chains and caught in the cords of affliction, But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction,
9 Then he shows them their works, and their transgression because they have exceeded their power. then he declares to them their work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly. he tells them what they have done— that they have sinned arrogantly.
10 He opens also their ears to discipline, and commands that they return from iniquity. He opens their ears to instruction and commands that they return from iniquity. He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil.
11 If they obey and serve him, they will spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasures. If they listen and serve him, they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasantness. If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.
12 But if they do not obey, they shall perish by destruction, and they shall perish without knowledge. But if they do not listen, they perish by the sword and die without knowledge. But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge.
13 But the hypocrites in heart shall be consumed, they shall not cry for help; yet they shall cry angrily when he binds them. “The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. “The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.
14 They shall die in youth, and their life is snatched by famine. They die in youth, and their life ends among the cult prostitutes. They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.
15 But the meek shall be delivered through his meekness, and he opens their way in time of oppression. He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity. But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction.
16 Even so he shall deliver you from the mouth of the mocker, and give you rest instead of distress; and he shall prepare a table with rich food. He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness. “He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.
17 But he shall judge the wicked to the limit: judgment and justice shall take hold on them. “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked; judgment and justice seize you. But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you.
18 He will not threaten you with a raging anger, nor will he cause you to be in need of a great ransom. Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing, and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.
19 He shall join you, that he may deliver you; you shall not be distressed by any of those who are mighty in power. Will your cry for help avail to keep you from distress, or all the force of your strength? Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?
20 He shall deliver you from those who drive you away in the night, and give peoples for your sake, and the nations for your life. Do not long for the night, when peoples vanish in their place. Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.
21 Take heed, that you may not return to iniquity: because for this you were tried by poverty. Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction.
22 Behold, God is mighty in power: who can teach like him? Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? “God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?
23 Who has enjoined him his way? Or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity? Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, ‘You have done wrong’? Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, ‘You have done wrong’?
24 Remember that his works are great, and all men have praised him. “Remember to extol his work, of which men have sung. Remember to extol his work, which people have praised in song.
25 All the peoples have seen it, and beheld it from afar. All mankind has looked on it; man beholds it from afar. All humanity has seen it; mortals gaze on it from afar.
26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, the number of his years is unsearchable. Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.
27 For if we should number the pillars of the heaven, and bind the drops of rain by themselves, which the skies do drop in their season; For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;
28 And which the clouds pour down upon men, and cause them to be exceedingly glad; which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly. the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.
29 Who can understand these things, or the spreading of the clouds out of the greatness of his tabernacle? Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion? Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion?
30 Behold, he spreads his light upon it, and covers the bottom of the sea. Behold, he scatters his lightning about him and covers the roots of the sea. See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea.
31 For by these he judges the people; and he gives food to many. For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. This is the way he governs the nations and provides food in abundance.
32 He covers the light with the clouds, and then it shines upon them again that they may greet it. He covers his hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark. He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.
33 He shows his possessions to his friends, and to the wicked also. Its crashing declares his presence; the cattle also declare that he rises. His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach.
