1 Eliu also proceeded, and said : And Elihu continued, and said: Elihu continued:
2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee : for I have yet somewhat to speak in God's behalf. “Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. “Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God’s behalf.
3 I will repeat my knowledge from the beginning, and I will prove my Maker just. I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker.
4 For indeed my words are without a lie, and perfect knowledge shall be proved to thee. For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you. Be assured that my words are not false; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.
5 God doth not cast away the mighty, whereas he himself also is mighty. “Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. “God is mighty, but despises no one; he is mighty, and firm in his purpose.
6 But he saveth not the wicked, and he giveth judgment to the poor. He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. He does not keep the wicked alive but gives the afflicted their rights.
7 He will not take away his eyes from the just, and he placeth kings on the throne for ever, and they are exalted. He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne he sets them forever, and they are exalted. He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.
8 And if they shall be in chains, and be bound with the cords of poverty : And if they are bound in chains and caught in the cords of affliction, But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction,
9 He shall shew them their works, and their wicked deeds, because they have been violent. then he declares to them their work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly. he tells them what they have done— that they have sinned arrogantly.
10 He also shall open their ear, to correct them : and shall speak, that they may return from iniquity. He opens their ears to instruction and commands that they return from iniquity. He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil.
11 If they shall hear and observe, they shall accomplish their days in good, and their years in glory. If they listen and serve him, they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasantness. If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.
12 But if they hear not, they shall pass by the sword, and shall be consumed in folly. But if they do not listen, they perish by the sword and die without knowledge. But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge.
13 Dissemblers and crafty men prove the wrath of God, neither shall they cry when they are bound. “The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. “The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.
14 Their soul shall die in a storm, and their life among the effeminate. They die in youth, and their life ends among the cult prostitutes. They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.
15 He shall deliver the poor out of his distress, and shall open his ear in affliction. He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity. But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction.
16 Therefore he shall set thee at large out of the narrow mouth, and which hath no foundation under it : and the rest of thy table shall be full of fatness. He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness. “He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.
17 Thy cause hath been judged as that of the wicked, cause and judgment thou shalt recover. “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked; judgment and justice seize you. But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you.
18 Therefore let not anger overcome thee to oppress any man : neither let multitude of gifts turn thee aside. Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing, and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.
19 Lay down thy greatness without tribulation, and all the mighty of strength. Will your cry for help avail to keep you from distress, or all the force of your strength? Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?
20 Prolong not the night that people may come up for them. Do not long for the night, when peoples vanish in their place. Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.
21 Beware thou turn not aside to iniquity : for this thou hast begun to follow after misery. Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction.
22 Behold, God is high in his strength, and none is like him among the lawgivers. Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? “God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?
23 Who can search out his ways? or who can say to him : Thou has wrought iniquity? Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, ‘You have done wrong’? Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, ‘You have done wrong’?
24 Remember that thou knowest not his work, concerning which men have sung. “Remember to extol his work, of which men have sung. Remember to extol his work, which people have praised in song.
25 All men see him, every one beholdeth afar off. All mankind has looked on it; man beholds it from afar. All humanity has seen it; mortals gaze on it from afar.
26 Behold, God is great, exceeding our knowledge : the number of his years is inestimable. Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.
27 He lifteth up the drops of rain, and poureth out showers like floods : For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;
28 Which flow from the clouds that cover all above. which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly. the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.
29 If he will spread out clouds as his tent, Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion? Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion?
30 And lighten with his light from above, he shall cover also the ends of the sea. Behold, he scatters his lightning about him and covers the roots of the sea. See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea.
31 For by these he judgeth people, and giveth food to many mortals. For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. This is the way he governs the nations and provides food in abundance.
32 In his hands he hideth the light, and commandeth it to come again. He covers his hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark. He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.
33 He sheweth his friend concerning it, that it is his possession, and that he may come up to it. Its crashing declares his presence; the cattle also declare that he rises. His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach.
