And Job adds to lift up his allegory and says: | And Job again took up his discourse, and said: | And Job continued his discourse: |
“God lives! He turned aside my judgment, || And the Mighty—He made my soul bitter. | “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, | “As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter, |
For all the while my breath [is] in me, || And the wind of God in my nostrils. | as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, | as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, |
My lips do not speak perverseness, || And my tongue does not utter deceit. | my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. | my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies. |
Defilement to me—if I justify you, || Until I expire I do not turn aside my integrity from me. | Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity. |
On my righteousness I have laid hold, || And I do not let it go, || My heart does not reproach me while I live. | I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. | I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live. |
My enemy is as the wicked, || And my withstander as the perverse. | “Let my enemy be as the wicked, and let him who rises up against me be as the unrighteous. | “May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unjust! |
For what [is] the hope of the profane, || When He cuts off? When God casts off his soul? | For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life? | For what hope have the godless when they are cut off, when God takes away their life? |
[Does] God hear his cry, || When distress comes on him? | Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him? | Does God listen to their cry when distress comes upon them? |
Does he delight himself on the Mighty? Call God at all times? | Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? | Will they find delight in the Almighty? Will they call on God at all times? |
I show you by the hand of God, || That which [is] with the Mighty I do not hide. | I will teach you concerning the hand of God; what is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | “I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal. |
Behold, you—all of you—have seen, || And why [is] this—you are altogether vain? | Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain? | You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk? |
This [is] the portion of wicked man with God, || And the inheritance of terrible ones || They receive from the Mighty. | “This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage that oppressors receive from the Almighty: | “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: |
If his sons multiply—a sword [is] for them. And his offspring [are] not satisfied [with] bread. | If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword, and his descendants have not enough bread. | However many his children, their fate is the sword; his offspring will never have enough to eat. |
His remnant are buried in death, || And his widows do not weep. | Those who survive him the pestilence buries, and his widows do not weep. | The plague will bury those who survive him, and their widows will not weep for them. |
If he heaps up silver as dust, || And prepares clothing as clay, | Though he heap up silver like dust, and pile up clothing like clay, | Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, |
He prepares—and the righteous puts [it] on, || And the innocent apportions the silver. | he may pile it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide the silver. | what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. |
He has built his house as a moth, || And as a shelter a watchman has made. | He builds his house like a moth’s, like a booth that a watchman makes. | The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. |
He lies down rich, and he is not gathered, || He has opened his eyes, and he is not. | He goes to bed rich, but will do so no more; he opens his eyes, and his wealth is gone. | He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone. |
Terrors overtake him as waters, || By night a whirlwind has stolen him away. | Terrors overtake him like a flood; in the night a whirlwind carries him off. | Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night. |
An east wind takes him up, and he goes, || And it frightens him from his place, | The east wind lifts him up and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. | The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. |
And it casts at him, and does not spare, || He diligently flees from its hand. | It hurls at him without pity; he flees from its power in headlong flight. | It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. |
It claps its hands at him, || And it hisses at him from his place.” | It claps its hands at him and hisses at him from its place. | It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.” |
