"Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him?2“Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.2"Can a vigorous man be of use to God, Or a wise man be useful to himself?2Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?2Can a man be of any use to God? Can even a wise man be of use to Him?
What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless?3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are in the right, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless?3"Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect?3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?3Does it delight the Almighty if you are righteous? Does He profit if you perfect your behavior?
"Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?4Is it for your fear of him that he reproves you and enters into judgment with you?4"Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you, That He enters into judgment against you?4Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?4Does He correct you and take you to court because of your piety?

Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless?5Is not your evil abundant? There is no end to your iniquities.5"Is not your wickedness great, And your iniquities without end?5Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?5Isn't your wickedness abundant and aren't your iniquities endless?
You demanded security from your relatives for no reason; you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.6For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing.6"For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause, And stripped men naked.6For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.6For you took collateral from your brothers without cause, stripping off their clothes and leaving them naked.
You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,7You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.7"To the weary you have given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have withheld bread.7Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.7You gave no water to the thirsty and withheld food from the famished,
though you were a powerful man, owning land-- an honored man, living on it.8The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it.8"But the earth belongs to the mighty man, And the honorable man dwells in it.8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.8while the land belonged to a powerful man and an influential man lived on it.
And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless.9You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed.9"You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the orphans has been crushed.9Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.9You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you,10Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you,10"Therefore snares surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you,10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;10Therefore snares surround you, and sudden dread terrifies you,
why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.11or darkness, so that you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.11Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And an abundance of water covers you.11Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.11or darkness, so you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.
"Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!12“Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are!12"Is not God in the height of heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are!12Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!12Isn't God as high as the heavens? And look at the highest stars--how lofty they are!
Yet you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness?13But you say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness?13"You say, 'What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness?13And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?13Yet you say: "What does God know? Can He judge through thick darkness?
Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'14Thick clouds veil him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.’14'Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.'14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.14Clouds veil Him so that He cannot see, as He walks on the circle of the sky."

Will you keep to the old path that the wicked have trod?15Will you keep to the old way that wicked men have trod?15"Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked men have trod,15Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?15Will you continue on the ancient path that wicked men have walked?
They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood.16They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away.16Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river?16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:16They were snatched away before their time, and their foundations were washed away by a river.
They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?'17They said to God, ‘Depart from us,’ and ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’17"They said to God, 'Depart from us!' And 'What can the Almighty do to them?'17Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?17They were the ones who said to God, "Leave us alone!" and "What can the Almighty do to us?"
Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.18Yet he filled their houses with good things— but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.18"Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.18Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.18But it was He who filled their houses with good things. The counsel of the wicked is far from me!
The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying,19The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent one mocks at them,19"The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them,19The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.19The righteous see this and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying,

Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.'20saying, ‘Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left the fire has consumed.’20Saying, 'Truly our adversaries are cut off, And their abundance the fire has consumed.'20Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.20"Surely our opponents are destroyed, and fire has consumed what they left behind."
"Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.21“Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.21"Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you.21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.21Come to terms with God and be at peace; in this way good will come to you.
Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.22Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.22"Please receive instruction from His mouth And establish His words in your heart.22Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.22Receive instruction from His mouth, and place His sayings in your heart.
If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent23If you return to the Almighty you will be built up; if you remove injustice far from your tents,23"If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent,23If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.23If you return to the Almighty, you will be renewed. If you banish injustice from your tent
and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,24if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed,24And place your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,24Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.24and consign your gold to the dust, the gold of Ophir to the stones in the wadis,

then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.25then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver.25Then the Almighty will be your gold And choice silver to you.25Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.25the Almighty will be your gold and your finest silver.
Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.26For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.26"For then you will delight in the Almighty And lift up your face to God.26For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.26Then you will delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.
You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.27You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows.27"You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows.27Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.27You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.
What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways.28You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways.28"You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways.28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.28When you make a decision, it will be carried out, and light will shine on your ways.
When people are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast.29For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’; but he saves the lowly.29"When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, And the humble person He will save.29When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.29When others are humiliated and you say, "Lift them up," God will save the humble.
He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."30He delivers even the one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”30"He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."30He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.30He will even rescue the guilty one, who will be rescued by the purity of your hands.
