2"Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him? | 2“Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. | 2"Can a vigorous man be of use to God, Or a wise man be useful to himself? | 2Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? | 2Can a man be of any use to God? Can even a wise man be of use to Him? |
3What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless? | 3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are in the right, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless? | 3"Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect? | 3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? | 3Does it delight the Almighty if you are righteous? Does He profit if you perfect your behavior? |
4"Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you? | 4Is it for your fear of him that he reproves you and enters into judgment with you? | 4"Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you, That He enters into judgment against you? | 4Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? | 4Does He correct you and take you to court because of your piety? |
5Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless? | 5Is not your evil abundant? There is no end to your iniquities. | 5"Is not your wickedness great, And your iniquities without end? | 5Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite? | 5Isn't your wickedness abundant and aren't your iniquities endless? |
6You demanded security from your relatives for no reason; you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked. | 6For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing. | 6"For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause, And stripped men naked. | 6For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. | 6For you took collateral from your brothers without cause, stripping off their clothes and leaving them naked. |
7You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry, | 7You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. | 7"To the weary you have given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have withheld bread. | 7Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. | 7You gave no water to the thirsty and withheld food from the famished, |
8though you were a powerful man, owning land-- an honored man, living on it. | 8The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it. | 8"But the earth belongs to the mighty man, And the honorable man dwells in it. | 8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. | 8while the land belonged to a powerful man and an influential man lived on it. |
9And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless. | 9You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed. | 9"You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the orphans has been crushed. | 9Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. | 9You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was crushed. |
10That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you, | 10Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you, | 10"Therefore snares surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you, | 10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; | 10Therefore snares surround you, and sudden dread terrifies you, |
11why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you. | 11or darkness, so that you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. | 11Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And an abundance of water covers you. | 11Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee. | 11or darkness, so you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. |
12"Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars! | 12“Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are! | 12"Is not God in the height of heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are! | 12Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! | 12Isn't God as high as the heavens? 13Yet you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness? | 13But you say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness? | 13"You say, 'What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness? | 13And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? | 13Yet you say: "What does God know? Can He judge through thick darkness? |
14Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.' | 14Thick clouds veil him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.’ | 14'Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.' | 14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. | 14Clouds veil Him so that He cannot see, as He walks on the circle of the sky." |
15Will you keep to the old path that the wicked have trod? | 15Will you keep to the old way that wicked men have trod? | 15"Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked men have trod, | 15Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? | 15Will you continue on the ancient path that wicked men have walked? |
16They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood. | 16They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away. | 16Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river? | 16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood: | 16They were snatched away before their time, and their foundations were washed away by a river. |
17They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?' | 17They said to God, ‘Depart from us,’ and ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’ | 17"They said to God, 'Depart from us!' And 'What can the Almighty do to them?' | 17Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? | 17They were the ones who said to God, "Leave us alone!" and "What can the Almighty do to us?" |
18Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked. | 18Yet he filled their houses with good things— but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. | 18"Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. | 18Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. | 18But it was He who filled their houses with good things. 19The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying, | 19The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent one mocks at them, | 19"The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them, | 19The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. | 19The righteous see this and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying, |
20Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.' | 20saying, ‘Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left the fire has consumed.’ | 20Saying, 'Truly our adversaries are cut off, And their abundance the fire has consumed.' | 20Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth. | 20"Surely our opponents are destroyed, and fire has consumed what they left behind." |
21"Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. | 21“Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. | 21"Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you. | 21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. | 21Come to terms with God and be at peace; in this way good will come to you. |

24and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, | 24if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed, | 24And place your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, | 24Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. | 24and consign your gold to the dust, the gold of Ophir to the stones in the wadis, |
25then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you. | 25then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver. | 25Then the Almighty will be your gold And choice silver to you. | 25Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. | 25the Almighty will be your gold and your finest silver. |

28What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways. | 28You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. | 28"You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways. | 28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. | 28When you make a decision, it will be carried out, and light will shine on your ways. |
29When people are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast. | 29For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’; but he saves the lowly. | 29"When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, And the humble person He will save. | 29When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. | 29When others are humiliated and you say, "Lift them up," God will save the humble. |
30He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands." | 30He delivers even the one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.” | 30"He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands." | 30He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands. | 30He will even rescue the guilty one, who will be rescued by the purity of your hands. |
