1 MY spirit is weary, my days are extinct; the grave is ready for me, “My spirit is broken; my days are extinct; the graveyard is ready for me. My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.
2 For there is no falsehood in me, and yet my spirit dwells in their bitterness. Surely there are mockers about me, and my eye dwells on their provocation. Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3 Make me, I pray thee, a hostage with thee; then I will surrender myself. “Lay down a pledge for me with you; who is there who will put up security for me? “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?
4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding; therefore they shall exalt themselves in their deception. Since you have closed their hearts to understanding, therefore you will not let them triumph. You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 When a friend behaves insolently toward his friend, even the eyes of his children shall fail. He who informs against his friends to get a share of their property— the eyes of his children will fail. If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail.
6 He has granted power to the nations; I shall be derided before them. “He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit. “God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
7 My eye is dim because of anger, and all my senses are like a shadow. My eye has grown dim from vexation, and all my members are like a shadow. My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow.
8 Upright men shall be amazed at this, and the innocent shall stir himself up against the guilty. The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless. The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
9 The righteous also shall hold to his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows stronger and stronger. Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
10 But as for you all, you are hypocritical, and yet you return and come to me; but I cannot find a wise man among you. But you, come on again, all of you, and I shall not find a wise man among you. “But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you.
11 O you time wasters! Dawdlers! Who think about nothing! O you destroyers of the hearts of the people! My days are past; my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart. My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart
12 You change the night into day; and you bring forth the light before the darkness is over. They make night into day: ‘The light,’ they say, ‘is near to the darkness.’ turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near.
13 If I wait, Sheol is my house; I have made my bed in the darkness. If I hope for Sheol as my house, if I make my bed in darkness, If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,
14 I have said to corruption, You are my father; to the worm, You are my mother and my sister. if I say to the pit, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’ if I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 Where is now my hope and my trust? As for my hope, who shall find it? where then is my hope? Who will see my hope? where then is my hope— who can see any hope for me?
16 They shall go down to the bottom of Sheol; they shall descend together into the dust. Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?” Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?”
