1 My spirit is destroyed, my days are extinguished—graves are for me. “My spirit is broken; my days are extinct; the graveyard is ready for me. My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.
2 If not, mockers are with me, and in their provocation my eye lodges. Surely there are mockers about me, and my eye dwells on their provocation. Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3 Place, please, my pledge with You; who is he who will strike himself to my hand? “Lay down a pledge for me with you; who is there who will put up security for me? “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?
4 For You have hidden their heart from understanding, and upon thus You will not exalt them. Since you have closed their hearts to understanding, therefore you will not let them triumph. You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 He reports his friends for a portion, and the eyes of his sons are consumed. He who informs against his friends to get a share of their property— the eyes of his children will fail. If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail.
6 And He has made me a byword among the peoples, and a spitting in the face I have become. “He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit. “God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
7 And my eye is dim from sorrow, and my members are like a shadow, all of them. My eye has grown dim from vexation, and all my members are like a shadow. My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow.
8 The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent rouses himself against the godless. The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless. The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
9 Yet the righteous shall hold to his way, and the one clean of hands shall add strength. Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows stronger and stronger. Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
10 But all of them, you⁺ should return and come in, please! And I shall not find a wise one among you⁺. But you, come on again, all of you, and I shall not find a wise man among you. “But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you.
11 My days have passed by, my plans are pulled out—the possessions of my heart. My days are past; my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart. My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart
12 They set the night into day: ‘Light is near in the face of darkness.’ They make night into day: ‘The light,’ they say, ‘is near to the darkness.’ turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near.
13 If I await Sheol as my house, if in the darkness I spread out my bed, If I hope for Sheol as my house, if I make my bed in darkness, If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,
14 if to the Pit I call out, ‘You are My father,’ or to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister’— if I say to the pit, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’ if I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 where, then, is my hope? And my hope, who can see it? where then is my hope? Who will see my hope? where then is my hope— who can see any hope for me?
16 Will it go down into the hands of Sheol, if we may rest together upon the dust?” Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?” Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?”
