1 “My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me. “My spirit is broken; my days are extinct; the graveyard is ready for me. My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.
2 “Surely there are mockers and mockery with me, And my eye gazes on their obstinacy and provocation. Surely there are mockers about me, and my eye dwells on their provocation. Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3 “Give me a pledge (guarantee, promise) with Yourself [acknowledge my innocence before my death]; Who is there that will be my guarantor and give security for me? “Lay down a pledge for me with you; who is there who will put up security for me? “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?
4 “But You [Lord] have closed their hearts to understanding, Therefore You will not exalt them [by giving a verdict against me]. Since you have closed their hearts to understanding, therefore you will not let them triumph. You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 “He who denounces and informs against his friends for a share of the spoil, The eyes of his children will also languish and fail. He who informs against his friends to get a share of their property— the eyes of his children will fail. If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail.
6 “But He has made me a byword and mockery among the people, And I have become one in whose face people spit. “He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit. “God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
7 “My eye has grown dim (unexpressive) because of grief, And all my [body’s] members are [wasted away] like a shadow. My eye has grown dim from vexation, and all my members are like a shadow. My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow.
8 “The upright will be [astonished and] appalled at this, And the innocent will stir himself up against the godless and polluted. The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless. The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
9 “Nevertheless the righteous will hold to his ways, And he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger. Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows stronger and stronger. Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
10 “But as for all of you, come back again, Even though I do not find a wise man among you. But you, come on again, all of you, and I shall not find a wise man among you. “But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you.
11 “My days are past, my purposes and plans are frustrated and torn apart; The wishes of my heart [are broken]. My days are past; my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart. My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart
12 “These [thoughts try to] make the night into the day; ‘The light is near,’ they say in the presence of darkness [but they pervert the truth]. They make night into day: ‘The light,’ they say, ‘is near to the darkness.’ turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near.
13 “But if I look to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) as my home, If I make my bed in the darkness, If I hope for Sheol as my house, if I make my bed in darkness, If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,
14 If I call out to the pit (grave), ‘You are my father’; And to the worm [that feeds on decay], ‘You are my mother and my sister [because I will soon be closest to you],’ if I say to the pit, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’ if I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 Where now is my hope? And who regards or considers or is even concerned about my hope? where then is my hope? Who will see my hope? where then is my hope— who can see any hope for me?
16 “Will my hope go down with me to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead)? Shall we go down together in the dust?” Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?” Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?”
