1 “Come and let us return [in repentance] to the LORD, For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. “Come, let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. “Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.
2 “After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up That we may live before Him. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.
3 “So let us know and become personally acquainted with Him; let us press on to know and understand fully the [greatness of the] LORD [to honor, heed, and deeply cherish Him]. His appearing is prepared and is as certain as the dawn, And He will come to us [in salvation] like the [heavy] rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth.” Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”
4 O Ephraim, what shall I do with you? O Judah, what shall I do with you? For your [wavering] loyalty and kindness are [transient] like the morning cloud And like the dew that goes away early. What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. “What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.
5 Therefore, I have hewn them in pieces by [the words of] the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth; My judgments [pronounced upon them by the prophets] are like the light that shines forth [obvious to all]. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth— then my judgments go forth like the sun.
6 For I desire and delight in [steadfast] loyalty [faithfulness in the covenant relationship], rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant; There they have dealt treacherously against Me. But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me. As at Adam, they have broken the covenant; they were unfaithful to me there.
8 Gilead is a city of wrongdoers; It is tracked with bloody footprints. Gilead is a city of evildoers, tracked with blood. Gilead is a city of evildoers, stained with footprints of blood.
9 And as bands of robbers [lie in] wait for a man, So a band of priests murder on the road toward Shechem [covering their crimes in that city of refuge]; Certainly they have committed crimes and outrages. As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests band together; they murder on the way to Shechem; they commit villainy. As marauders lie in ambush for a victim, so do bands of priests; they murder on the road to Shechem, carrying out their wicked schemes.
10 I have seen a horrible thing [sins of every kind] in the house of Israel! Ephraim’s prostitution (idolatry) is there; Israel has defiled itself. In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s whoredom is there; Israel is defiled. I have seen a horrible thing in Israel: There Ephraim is given to prostitution, Israel is defiled.
11 Also, O Judah, there is a harvest [of divine judgment] appointed for you, When I restore the fortunes of My people [who have been slaves to the misery of sin]. For you also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed. When I restore the fortunes of my people, “Also for you, Judah, a harvest is appointed. “Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,
