1 Wherefore let us cease to speak of the first principles of Christ, and press on unto perfection; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
2 of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit. And this we will do if God permits. And God permitting, we will do so.
4 For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
5 and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age
6 and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
7 For the land which hath drunk the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receiveth blessing from God: For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.
8 but if it beareth thorns and thistles, it is rejected and nigh unto a curse; whose end is to be burned. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak: Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation.
10 for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love which ye shewed toward his name, in that ye ministered unto the saints, and still do minister. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
11 And we desire that each one of you may shew the same diligence unto the fulness of hope even to the end: And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.
12 that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he sware by himself, For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
14 saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”
15 And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise. And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 For men swear by the greater: and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation. For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
17 Wherein God, being minded to shew more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath: So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us; so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
19 which we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil; We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,
20 whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
