1 The snake was more clever than all the wild animals the LORD God had made. He asked the woman, |Did God really say, 'You must never eat the fruit of any tree in the garden'?| Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman answered the snake, |We're allowed to eat the fruit from any tree in the garden And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3 except the tree in the middle of the garden. God said, 'You must never eat it or touch it. If you do, you will die!'| but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
4 |You certainly won't die!| the snake told the woman. But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
5 God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened. You'll be like God, knowing good and evil.| For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 The woman saw that the tree had fruit that was good to eat, nice to look at, and desirable for making someone wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7 Then their eyes were opened, and they both realized that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made clothes for themselves. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 In the cool of the evening, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking around in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees in the garden. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 The LORD God called to the man and asked him, |Where are you?| But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, |I heard you in the garden. I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.| And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 God asked, |Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from the tree I commanded you not to eat from?| He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 The man answered, |That woman, the one you gave me, gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.| The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the LORD God asked the woman, |What have you done?| |The snake deceived me, and I ate,| the woman answered. Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 So the LORD God said to the snake, |Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all the wild or domestic animals. You will crawl on your belly. You will be the lowest of animals as long as you live. The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15 I will make you and the woman hostile toward each other. I will make your descendants and her descendant hostile toward each other. He will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel.| I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
16 He said to the woman, |I will increase your pain and your labor when you give birth to children. Yet, you will long for your husband, and he will rule you.| To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17 Then he said to the man, |You listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree, although I commanded you, 'You must never eat its fruit.' The ground is cursed because of you. Through hard work you will eat [food that comes] from it every day of your life. And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
18 The ground will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat wild plants. thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow, you will produce food to eat until you return to the ground, because you were taken from it. You are dust, and you will return to dust.| By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
20 Adam named his wife Eve [Life] because she became the mother of every living person. The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The LORD God made clothes from animal skins for the man and his wife and dressed them. And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
22 Then the LORD God said, |The man has become like one of us, since he knows good and evil. He must not reach out and take the fruit from the tree of life and eat. Then he would live forever.| Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
23 So the LORD God sent the man out of the Garden of Eden to farm the ground from which the man had been formed. therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 After he sent the man out, God placed angels and a flaming sword that turned in all directions east of the Garden of Eden. He placed them there to guard the way to the tree of life. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
