1 And the heavens and the earth and all their host were finished. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 And God had finished on the seventh day his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it, because that on it he rested from all his work which God had created in making it. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. 5 and every shrub of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew; for Jehovah Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground. When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
6 But a mist went up from the earth, and moistened the whole surface of the ground. and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 And Jehovah Elohim formed Man, dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and Man became a living soul. then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 And Jehovah Elohim planted a garden in Eden eastward, and there put Man whom he had formed. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
9 And out of the ground Jehovah Elohim made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; and the tree of life, in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river went out of Eden, to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four main streams. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
11 The name of the one is Pison: that is it which surrounds the whole land of Havilah, where the gold is. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and the onyx stone are there. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: that is it which surrounds the whole land of Cush. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which flows forward toward Asshur. And the fourth river, that is Euphrates. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 And Jehovah Elohim took Man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to till it and to guard it. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
16 And Jehovah Elohim commanded Man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou shalt freely eat; And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest of it thou shalt certainly die. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
18 And Jehovah Elohim said, It is not good that Man should be alone; I will make him a helpmate, his like. Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 And out of the ground Jehovah Elohim had formed every animal of the field and all fowl of the heavens, and brought [them] to Man, to see what he would call them; and whatever Man called each living soul, that was its name. Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20 And Man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but as for Adam, he found no helpmate, his like. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21 And Jehovah Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon Man; and he slept. And he took one of his ribs and closed up flesh in its stead. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
22 And Jehovah Elohim built the rib that he had taken from Man into a woman; and brought her to Man. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 And Man said, This time it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh: this shall be called Woman, because this was taken out of a man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, Man and his wife, and were not ashamed. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
