And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying, | The word of the LORD came to me: | The word of the LORD came to me: |
“Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem, and prophesy to the holy places, and prophesy to the ground of Israel; | “Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel | “Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuary. Prophesy against the land of Israel |
and you have said to the ground of Israel, Thus said YHWH: Behold, I [am] against you, || And have brought out My sword from its scabbard, || And have cut off righteous and wicked from you. | and say to the land of Israel, Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am against you and will draw my sword from its sheath and will cut off from you both righteous and wicked. | and say to her: ‘This is what the LORD says: I am against you. I will draw my sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked. |
Because that I have cut off righteous and wicked from you, || Therefore My sword goes out from its scabbard, || To all flesh, from south to north. | Because I will cut off from you both righteous and wicked, therefore my sword shall be drawn from its sheath against all flesh from south to north. | Because I am going to cut off the righteous and the wicked, my sword will be unsheathed against everyone from south to north. |
And all flesh has known that I, YHWH, || Have brought out My sword from its scabbard, || It does not turn back anymore. | And all flesh shall know that I am the LORD. I have drawn my sword from its sheath; it shall not be sheathed again. | Then all people will know that I the LORD have drawn my sword from its sheath; it will not return again.’ |
And you, son of man, sigh with breaking of loins, indeed, sigh before their eyes with bitterness, | “As for you, son of man, groan; with breaking heart and bitter grief, groan before their eyes. | “Therefore groan, son of man! Groan before them with broken heart and bitter grief. |
and it has come to pass, when they say to you, Why are you sighing? That you have said: Because of the report, for it is coming, || And every heart has melted, || And all hands have been feeble, || And every spirit is weak, || And all knees go [as] waters, || Behold, it is coming, indeed, it has been, || A declaration of Lord YHWH.” | And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news that it is coming. Every heart will melt, and all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and all knees will be weak as water. Behold, it is coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord GOD. | And when they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand go limp; every spirit will become faint and every leg will be wet with urine.’ It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign LORD.” |
And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying, | And the word of the LORD came to me: | The word of the LORD came to me: |
“Son of man, prophesy, and you have said, Thus said YHWH: Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also polished. | “Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, say: “A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished, | “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “’A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished— |
It is sharpened so as to slaughter a slaughter. It is polished so as to have brightness, || Or do we rejoice? It is despising the scepter of My son [as] every tree. | sharpened for slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! (Or shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, with everything of wood.) | sharpened for the slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! “’Shall we rejoice in the scepter of my royal son? The sword despises every such stick. |
And He gives it for polishing, || For laying hold of by the hand. It is sharpened—the sword—and polished, || To give it into the hand of a slayer. | So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished to be given into the hand of the slayer. | “’The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped with the hand; it is sharpened and polished, made ready for the hand of the slayer. |
Cry and howl, son of man, || For it has been among My people, || It [is] among all the princes of Israel, || My people have been cast to the sword. Therefore strike on your thigh, | Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. Strike therefore upon your thigh. | Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people; it is against all the princes of Israel. They are thrown to the sword along with my people. Therefore beat your breast. |
Because [it is] a trier, || And what if it is even despising the scepter? It will not be, a declaration of Lord YHWH. | For it will not be a testing—what could it do if you despise the rod?” declares the Lord GOD. | “’Testing will surely come. And what if even the scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue? declares the Sovereign LORD.’ |
And you, son of man, prophesy, || And strike hand on hand, || And the sword is bent a third time, || The sword of the wounded! It [is] the sword of the wounded—the great one, || That is entering the inner chamber to them. | “As for you, son of man, prophesy. Clap your hands and let the sword come down twice, yes, three times, the sword for those to be slain. It is the sword for the great slaughter, which surrounds them, | “So then, son of man, prophesy and strike your hands together. Let the sword strike twice, even three times. It is a sword for slaughter— a sword for great slaughter, closing in on them from every side. |
To melt the heart, and to multiply the ruins, || I have set the point of a sword by all their gates. Aah! It is made for brightness, || Wrapped up for slaughter. | that their hearts may melt, and many stumble. At all their gates I have given the glittering sword. Ah, it is made like lightning; it is taken up for slaughter. | So that hearts may melt with fear and the fallen be many, I have stationed the sword for slaughter at all their gates. Look! It is forged to strike like lightning, it is grasped for slaughter. |
Take possession of the right, place yourself at the left, || To where your face is appointed. | Cut sharply to the right; set yourself to the left, wherever your face is directed. | Slash to the right, you sword, then to the left, wherever your blade is turned. |
And I also, I strike My hand on My hand, || And have caused My fury to rest; I, YHWH, have spoken.” | I also will clap my hands, and I will satisfy my fury; I the LORD have spoken.” | I too will strike my hands together, and my wrath will subside. I the LORD have spoken.” |
And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying, | The word of the LORD came to me again: | The word of the LORD came to me: |
“And you, son of man, appoint two ways for yourself, for the coming in of the sword of the king of Babylon; they come forth from one land, both of them. And create a station; create [it] at the top of the way of the city. | “As for you, son of man, mark two ways for the sword of the king of Babylon to come. Both of them shall come from the same land. And make a signpost; make it at the head of the way to a city. | “Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same country. Make a signpost where the road branches off to the city. |
Appoint a way for the coming of the sword, || To Rabbath of the sons of Ammon, || And to Judah, in fortified Jerusalem. | Mark a way for the sword to come to Rabbah of the Ammonites and to Judah, into Jerusalem the fortified. | Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem. |
For the king of Babylon has stood at the head of the way, || At the top of the two ways, to use divination, || He has moved lightly with the arrows, || He has inquired of the teraphim, || He has looked on the liver. | For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows; he consults the teraphim; he looks at the liver. | For the king of Babylon will stop at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He will cast lots with arrows, he will consult his idols, he will examine the liver. |
The divination [for] Jerusalem has been at his right, || To place battering-rams, || To open the mouth with slaughter, || To lift up a voice with shouting, || To place battering-rams against the gates, || To pour out a mound, to build a fortification. | Into his right hand comes the divination for Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth with murder, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up mounds, to build siege towers. | Into his right hand will come the lot for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to give the command to slaughter, to sound the battle cry, to set battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp and to erect siege works. |
And it has been to them as a false divination in their eyes, || Who have sworn oaths to them, || But he is causing iniquity to be remembered [so they] are caught. | But to them it will seem like a false divination. They have sworn solemn oaths, but he brings their guilt to remembrance, that they may be taken. | It will seem like a false omen to those who have sworn allegiance to him, but he will remind them of their guilt and take them captive. |
Therefore, thus said Lord YHWH: Because of your causing your iniquity to be remembered, || In your transgressions being revealed, || For your sins being seen, in all your doings, || Because of your being remembered, || You are caught by the hand. | “Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have made your guilt to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins appear—because you have come to remembrance, you shall be taken in hand. | “Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘Because you people have brought to mind your guilt by your open rebellion, revealing your sins in all that you do—because you have done this, you will be taken captive. |
And you, wounded, wicked one, || Prince of Israel, whose day has come, || In the time of the iniquity of the end, | And you, O profane wicked one, prince of Israel, whose day has come, the time of your final punishment, | “’You profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, whose time of punishment has reached its climax, |
Thus said Lord YHWH: Turn aside the turban, and carry away the crown, || This—not this—make high the low, || And make low the high. | thus says the Lord GOD: Remove the turban and take off the crown. Things shall not remain as they are. Exalt that which is low, and bring low that which is exalted. | this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Take off the turban, remove the crown. It will not be as it was: The lowly will be exalted and the exalted will be brought low. |
An overturn, overturn, overturn, I make it, || Also this has not been until the coming of Him, || Whose [is] the judgment, and I have given it. | A ruin, ruin, ruin I will make it. This also shall not be, until he comes, the one to whom judgment belongs, and I will give it to him. | A ruin! A ruin! I will make it a ruin! The crown will not be restored until he to whom it rightfully belongs shall come; to him I will give it.’ |
And you, son of man, prophesy, and you have said, Thus said Lord YHWH concerning the sons of Ammon, and concerning their reproach, and you have said: A sword, a sword, open for slaughter, || Polished to the utmost for brightness! | “And you, son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, A sword, a sword is drawn for the slaughter. It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning— | “And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says about the Ammonites and their insults: “’A sword, a sword, drawn for the slaughter, polished to consume and to flash like lightning! |
In seeing a vain thing for you, || In divining a lie for you, || To put you on the necks of the wounded of the wicked, whose day has come, || In the time of the iniquity of the end. | while they see for you false visions, while they divine lies for you—to place you on the necks of the profane wicked, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment. | Despite false visions concerning you and lying divinations about you, it will be laid on the necks of the wicked who are to be slain, whose day has come, whose time of punishment has reached its climax. |
Turn [it] back to its scabbard; I judge you || In the place where you were produced, || In the land of your birth. | Return it to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you. | “’Let the sword return to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your ancestry, I will judge you. |
And I have poured My indignation on you, || I blow against you with [the] fire of My wrath, || And have given you into the hand of brutish men—craftsmen of destruction. | And I will pour out my indignation upon you; I will blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and I will deliver you into the hands of brutish men, skillful to destroy. | I will pour out my wrath on you and breathe out my fiery anger against you; I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men, men skilled in destruction. |
You are fuel for the fire, || Your blood is in the midst of the land, || You are not remembered, || For I, YHWH, have spoken!” | You shall be fuel for the fire. Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. You shall be no more remembered, for I the LORD have spoken.” | You will be fuel for the fire, your blood will be shed in your land, you will be remembered no more; for I the LORD have spoken.’” |
