Ye shall observe to do all the commands which I charge you to-day, that ye may live and be multiplied, and enter in and inherit the land, which the Lord your God sware to give to your fathers. | “The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers. | Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors. |
And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee in the wilderness, that he might afflict thee, and try thee, and that the things in thine heart might be made manifest, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no. | And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. | Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. |
And he afflicted thee and straitened thee with hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might teach thee that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God shall man live. | And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. | He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. |
Thy garments grew not old from off thee, thy shoes were not worn from off thee, thy feet were not painfully hardened, lo! these forty years. | Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. | Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. |
And thou shalt know in thine heart, that as if any man should chasten his son, so the Lord thy God will chasten thee. | Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. | Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. |
And thou shalt keep the commands of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. | So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. | Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. |
For the Lord thy God will bring thee into a good and extensive land, where there are torrents of waters, and fountains of deep places issuing through the plains and through the mountains: | For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, | For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; |
a land of wheat and barley, wherein are vines, figs, pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; | a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, | a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; |
a land on which thou shalt not eat thy bread with poverty, and thou shalt not want any thing upon it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of its mountains thou shalt dig brass. | a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. | a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. |
And thou shalt eat and be filled, and shalt bless the Lord thy God on the good land, which he has given thee. | And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. | When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. |
Take heed to thyself that thou forget not the Lord thy God, so as not to keep his commands, and his judgments, and ordinances, which I command thee this day: | “Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, | Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. |
lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them; | lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, | Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, |
and thy oxen and thy sheep are multiplied to thee, and thy silver and thy gold are multiplied to thee, and all thy possessions are multiplied to thee, | and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, | and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, |
thou shouldest be exalted in heart, and forget the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage: | then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, | then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. |
who brought thee through that great and terrible wilderness, where is the biting serpent, and scorpion, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee a fountain of water out of the flinty rock: | who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, | He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. |
who fed thee with manna in the wilderness, which thou knewest not, and thy fathers knew not; that he might afflict thee, and thoroughly try thee, and do thee good in thy latter days. | who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. | He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. |
Lest thou shouldest say in thine heart, My strength, and the power of mine hand have wrought for me this great wealth. | Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ | You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” |
But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, that he gives thee strength to get wealth; even that he may establish his covenant, which the Lord sware to thy fathers, as at this day. | You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. | But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. |
And it shall come to pass if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and shouldest go after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall surely perish. | And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. | If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. |
As also the other nations which the Lord God destroys before your face, so shall ye perish, because ye hearkened not to the voice of the Lord your God. | Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. | Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God. |
