1 All the commandments, that I command thee this day, take great care to observe: that you may live, and be multiplied, and going in may possess the land, for which the Lord swore to your fathers. “The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers. Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.
2 And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no. And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
3 He afflicted thee with want, and gave thee manna for thy food, which neither thou nor thy fathers knew: to shew that m not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
4 Thy raiment, with which thou wast covered, hath not decayed for age, and thy foot is not worn, lo this is the fortieth year, Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
5 That thou mayst consider in thy heart, that as a man traineth up his son, so the Lord thy God hath trained thee up. Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
6 That thou shouldst keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways, and fear him. So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.
7 For the Lord thy God will bring thee into a good land, of brooks and of waters, and of fountains: in the plains of which and the hills deep rivers break out: For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;
8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vineyards, wherein fig trees and pomegranates, and oliveyards grow: a land of oil and honey. a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;
9 Where without any want thou shalt eat thy bread, and enjoy abundance of all things: where the stones are iron, and out of its hills are dug mines of brass: a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
10 That when thou hast eaten, and art full, thou mayst bless the Lord thy God for the excellent land which he hath given thee. And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
11 Take heed, and beware lest at any time thou forget the Lord thy God, and neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies, which I command thee this day: “Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
12 Lest after thou hast eaten and art filled, hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them, lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,
13 And shalt have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep, and plenty of gold and of silver, and of all things, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,
14 Thy heart be lifted up, and thou remember not the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage: then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
15 And was thy leader in the great and terrible wilderness, wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath, and the scorpion and the dipsas, and no waters at all: who brought forth streams out of the hardest rock, who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
16 And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee, who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
17 Lest thou shouldst say in thy heart: My own might, and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me. Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”
18 But remember the Lord thy God, that he hath given thee strength, that he might fulfil his covenant, concerning which he swore to thy fathers, as this present day sheweth. You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
19 But if thou forget the Lord thy God, and follow strange gods, and serve and adore them: behold now I foretell thee that thou shalt utterly perish. And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
20 As the nations, which the Lord destroyed at thy entrance, so shall you also perish, if you be disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God. Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
