1 Therefore having these promises, beloved, we should cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
2 Make room for us. We wronged no one, we corrupted no one, we took advantage of no one. Make room in your hearts for us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.
3 I do not speak for condemnation; for I have before said that you⁺ are in our hearts for us to die together and to live together. I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.
4 Much is my boldness toward you⁺; much is my boasting on behalf of you⁺; I have been filled with encouragement; I overabound with joy upon all our tribulation. I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
5 For also of our having come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest; but we are being pressed in every way: conflicts on the outside, fears within. For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—fighting without and fear within. For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within.
6 But God, the One comforting the downcast, comforted us in the coming of Titus, But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,
7 and not only in his coming, but also in the comfort with which he was comforted over you⁺, declaring to us your⁺ longing, your⁺ mourning, your⁺ zeal for me, so as for me to rejoice the more. and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
8 For if also I grieved you⁺ in the letter, I do not regret it—even if I did regret it; for I see that the letter grieved you⁺, that even if for an hour. For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while—
9 Now I rejoice, not that you⁺ were grieved, but that you⁺ were grieved unto repentance. For you⁺ were grieved according to God, so that you⁺ might suffer loss in nothing through us. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.
10 For grief according to God works repentance unto salvation without regret; but the grief of the world produces death. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
11 For behold how much earnestness this same thing—to have been grieved according to God—produced in you⁺: but defense, but indignation, but fear, but longing, but zeal, but avenging! In everything, you⁺ commended yourselves to be innocent in the matter. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
12 So even if I wrote to you⁺, it was not for the sake of the one having done wrong, nor for the sake of the one having suffered wrong, but for the sake of your⁺ earnestness for us being made manifest to you⁺ before God. So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.
13 On account of this, we have been comforted. And upon our comfort, we rejoiced more abundantly rather at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you⁺. Therefore we are comforted. And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.
14 For if I have boasted anything to him about you⁺, I was not put to shame; but as we spoke all things to you⁺ in truth, so also our boasting to Titus became truth. For whatever boasts I made to him about you, I was not put to shame. But just as everything we said to you was true, so also our boasting before Titus has proved true. I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well.
15 And his affections are more abundantly for you⁺, remembering the obedience of all of you⁺, how you⁺ received him with fear and trembling. And his affection for you is even greater, as he remembers the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling. And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling.
16 I rejoice that in everything I am confident in you⁺. I rejoice, because I have complete confidence in you. I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.
