1 But the Spirit speaks expressly, that in latter times some shall apostatise from the faith, giving their mind to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, cauterised as to their own conscience, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
3 forbidding to marry, [bidding] to abstain from meats, which God has created for receiving with thanksgiving for them who are faithful and know the truth. who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 6 Laying these things before the brethren, thou wilt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished with the words of the faith and of the good teaching which thou hast fully followed up. If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
7 But profane and old wives' fables avoid, but exercise thyself unto piety; Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
8 for bodily exercise is profitable for a little, but piety is profitable for everything, having promise of life, of the present one, and of that to come. for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
9 The word [is] faithful and worthy of all acceptation; The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.
10 for, for this we labour and suffer reproach, because we hope in a living God, who is preserver of all men, specially of those that believe. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. 12 Let no one despise thy youth, but be a model of the believers, in word, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 14 Be not negligent of the gift [that is] in thee, which has been given to thee through prophecy, with imposition of the hands of the elderhood. 16 Give heed to thyself and to the teaching; continue in them; for, doing this, thou shalt save both thyself and those that hear thee. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
