1 Peter, an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Jesus Christ, To those [elect—both Jewish and Gentile believers] who live as exiles, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia [Minor], and Bithynia, who are chosen Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by the sanctifying work of the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace [that special sense of spiritual well-being] be yours in increasing abundance [as you walk closely with God]. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
3 Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant and boundless mercy has caused us to be born again [that is, to be reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] to an ever-living hope and confident assurance through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 [born anew] into an inheritance which is imperishable [beyond the reach of change] and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,
5 who are being protected and shielded by the power of God through your faith for salvation that is ready to be revealed [for you] in the last time. who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In this you rejoice greatly, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
7 so that the genuineness of your faith, which is much more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested and purified by fire, may be found to result in [your] praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not even see Him now, you believe and trust in Him and you greatly rejoice and delight with inexpressible and glorious joy, Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9 receiving as the result [the outcome, the consummation] of your faith, the salvation of your souls. obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
10 Regarding this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace [of God] that was intended for you, searched carefully and inquired [about this future way of salvation], Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,
11 seeking to find out what person or what time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He foretold the sufferings of Christ and the glories [destined] to follow. inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.
12 It was revealed to them that their services [their prophecies regarding grace] were not [meant] for themselves and their time, but for you, in these things [the death, resurrection, and glorification of Jesus Christ] which have now been told to you by those who preached the gospel to you by the [power of the] Holy Spirit [who was] sent from heaven. Into these things even the angels long to look. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
13 So prepare your minds for action, be completely sober [in spirit—steadfast, self-disciplined, spiritually and morally alert], fix your hope completely on the grace [of God] that is coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
14 [Live] as obedient children [of God]; do not be conformed to the evil desires which governed you in your ignorance [before you knew the requirements and transforming power of the good news regarding salvation]. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
15 But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your conduct [be set apart from the world by your godly character and moral courage]; but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
16 because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY (set apart), FOR I AM HOLY.” since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
17 If you address as Father, the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in [reverent] fear [of Him] and with profound respect for Him throughout the time of your stay on earth. And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.
18 For you know that you were not redeemed from your useless [spiritually unproductive] way of life inherited [by tradition] from your forefathers with perishable things like silver and gold, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,
19 but [you were actually purchased] with precious blood, like that of a [sacrificial] lamb unblemished and spotless, the priceless blood of Christ. but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
20 For He was foreordained (foreknown) before the foundation of the world, but has appeared [publicly] in these last times for your sake He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
21 and through Him you believe [confidently] in God [the heavenly Father], who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are [centered and rest] in God. who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
22 Since by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves for a sincere love of the believers, [see that you] love one another from the heart [always unselfishly seeking the best for one another], Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.
23 for you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God. since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
24 For, “ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25 BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER.” And this is the word [the good news of salvation] which was preached to you. but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you. but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
